Krupakupareswarar Temple, Komal – Legends

Krupakupareswarar Temple, Komal – Legends

As per legend, Mother Parvathi wanted to know how Lord Shiva is conducting the affairs of this universe and asked Lord Shiva about it. Lord Shiva played his Thiruvilayadal (holy play) and made Mother Parvathi to cover his eyes with her hands. The activities of the world came to standstill within a fraction of second. Mother Parvathy was shocked to witness the incident and sought the pardon of the Lord Shiva for her mistake in closing the eyes of Lord Shiva.

Lord Shiva informed her that he would disappear in the light emanating from his hands (Hasthavarna Jyothi) as she made the universe plunge into darkness. Further, he stated that she must go to earth in the form of cow and locate him in the form of bright light and join him again. She came to earth and started searching for the Jyoti with the help of his brother Lord Vishnu. Both together started searching for the Jyothi.

They started searching everywhere and finally the Jyoti appeared on Hastha star day in this place. This Jyoti is called as Komaleeya Jyoti. The name of the place, Komal, derived from this Jyoti. As Lord Shiva showered his blessings (Krupa), he came to be called as Krupakupareswarar. As Mother Parvathi took the form of a cow and worshipped here, hence the place came to be called as Gopuri (Go means cow & Puri means place).
