Brahmapureeswarar Temple,
Abhiramapuram, Thanjavur
Brahmapureeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Abhiramapuram Village near Pandanallur in Thiruvidaimaruthur Taluk in Thanjavur District in Tamil Nadu. Presiding deity is called as Brahmapureeswarar and Mother is called as Abhirami. The Temple is situated on the southern banks of Manniyaru river.
Legends
Once,
a pregnant woman from this village had a sudden labour pain. She went to the
doctor for the checkup. The doctor informed her that the condition was
critical, and surgery was required. Further, he said that the baby would not
survive due to the complications from the surgery. The woman got shocked to
hear the words from the doctor, went to the temple and cried at the Abhirami shrine
for the safety of the child. Mother Abhirami appeared in the dreams of the
pregnant woman, left a child at her door step and vanished.
The
pregnant woman could not understand the reason behind her dream. Next day, she
got the labor pain and went to hospital for delivery. To everyone surprise, he
gave birth to a healthy girl child without any complications. She believed that
the newly born girl child was the one left by Mother Abhirami in her dream and
she named the child as Abhirami.
The
Temple
This
Temple is facing towards east with an unfinished rajagopuram. The temple
consists of sanctum, ardha mandapam and maha mandapam. The ardha mandapam and maha
mandapam is designed to look like the forehead of a bat (Vovval Nethi
Mandapam). Shrines of Vinayaga and
Murugan can be seen on either sides of the entrance of the maha mandapam. Nandi
and Balipeedam can be found in the maha mandapam, facing towards the sanctum.
Presiding
deity is called as Brahmapureeswarar and is facing east. He is housed in the sanctum
in the form of Lingam. Dakshinamoorthy, Lingodbhava, Brahma and Durga are the
koshta idols located around the sanctum walls. Chandikeswarar shrine can be
seen in his usual location. Mother is called as Abhirami. She is housed in a
separate south facing shrine. Her shrine is situated on the right side in maha
mandapam.
She is four armed. Her upper
hands hold Aksha Mala & lotus and her lower hands show Abhaya and Uru
Hastha. Shrines and idols of Vinayagar,
Murugan, Saraswathi, Gaja Lakshmi and Navagrahas can be seen in the temple
premises. There is a large temple tank situated opposite to the temple.

Purattasi
Navaratri (Sep-Oct) is the most important festival celebrated here. Monthly
pradoshams are also observed here.

14 Kms from Thiruppanandal, 21 Kms from Mayiladuthurai Junction Railway Station,
24 Kms from Mayiladuthurai, 26 Kms from Thiruvidaimaruthur, 33 Kms from
Kumbakonam, 70 Kms from Thanjavur and 122 Kms from Trichy Airport. The Temple
is situated on Thiruppanandal to Manalmedu route immediately after
Pandanallur.
