Sathyapureeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Ponmar Village in Vandalur Taluk in Chengalpattu District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding deity is called as Sathyapureeswarar / Sakthipureeswarar and Mother is called as Sathyapureeswari / Sakthipureeswari. The temple is situated on Ponmar to Navalur route.

Legends

As per legend, Lord Chandran excavated a tank, took a holy dip and worshipped Lord Shiva of this temple to get relief from his sins.

History

The temple was built in 1520 CE during the reign of Sadasivaraya of Vijayanagara Kingdom. There is an inscription dating back to 1520 CE during the reign of Sadasivaraya of Vijayanagara Kingdom can be found in the jagati and kumuda of the plinth. This inscription records the endowment of Poyilicheri village for the pooja and worship of Poyileesvaramudaiya Nayanar and Veerabhadra Nayanar. The village was mentioned as Jayamkonda Chozha Mandalathu Puliyur Kottathu Kaalvai Naatu Thyaga Vinodha Nallurana Ponmaaru. The ruined shrine on the northern side of the temple is the Veerabhadra temple mentioned in the inscription. There are several inscriptions dating back to reign of Vijayanagara Kingdom can be found in the temple premises.

Temple Opening Time

There is no fixed timing for this temple, but the temple is kept open for certain time during the morning and evening hours. The priest need to be contacted for darshan.

Prayers

Devotees pray Sathyapureeswarar for relief from stomach pains. Devotees believe performing abhishekam to goddess Sathyapureeswari with turmeric will provide cure to thyroid problems in ladies.

Connectivity

The temple is located at about 750 metres from Ponmar Bus Stop, 3 Kms from Mambakkam, 6 Kms from Navalur, 9 Kms from Medavakkam, 15 Kms from Tambaram Railway Station, 16 Kms from Tambaram, 19 Kms from Vandalur, 20 Kms from Chennai Airport, 33 Kms from Chennai and 38 Kms from Chengalpattu. Devotees need to travel in Medavakkam to Mambakkam route and then take a turn at Ponmar towards Navalur for about 750 metres to reach this temple. Buses (51T & 551A) are available from Tambaram to Ponmar. Bus (51J) from Koyambedu to Mambakkam and Buses (51J, J51 & 51T) from T Nagar via Medavakkam passes through the Ponmar village. Autos are available from Mambakkam to reach this temple.
