Kalyana Sundareswarar Temple, Tiruvelvikudi, Mayiladuthurai

Kalyana Sundareswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Tiruvelvikudi Village in Kuthalam Taluk in Mayiladuthurai District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding deity is called as Kalyana Sundareswarar / Manavaleswarar / Gowthageswarar and Mother is called as Parimala Sugantha Nayaki / Gowthakesi / Narunchanthu Nayagi. This temple is considered as one of the Pancha Krosha Sthalams of Thirumanancheri. This temple is considered as parihara sthalam for marriage related doshas.





This temple is considered as one of the shrines of the 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams glorified in the early medieval Thevaram hymns. This temple is the 77th Devara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 23th sthalam on the north side of river Cauvery in Chozha Nadu. This temple is sung by Thirugnana Sambandar and Sundarar along with the praise of Kuthalam Ukthavedeeswarar Temple in their hymns.

History

The temple might have been in existence from 6th century CE. The temple was completely reconstructed in granite during Parantaka Chola I in 10th century CE. The temple was later extensively renovated by the Nayaks of Vijayanagara Kingdom. Lord Shiva was called as Manavalanambi / Thiruvelvikudi  Udayar / Mangalanakkar and the place was called as Rajathiraja Valanaatu Kurukkai Naattu Gangaikonda Chola Chathurvedimangalathu Thiruvelvikudi and Viruthabayangara Valanaattu Kurukkai Naattu Thiruvelvikudi in the inscriptions.





Inscriptions dating back to Parantaka 1, Parantaka II, Uthama Chola, Rajaraja Chola I, Rajendra Chola I, Kulothunga Chola I and Vikrama Chola have been found in this temple. Inscriptions records the gifts & grants made to this temple, land grants made for the provision of the foods to the sages & devotees, renovation activities carried out in the temple, constructional activities made in the temple, grants for conducting rituals & festivals and burning of perpetual lamps.

Temple Opening Time

The temple remains open from 08.00 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. and 05.00 p.m. to 07.00 p.m.

Festivals

Avani Vinayagar Chaturthi (Aug-Sep), Margazhi Thiruvadhirai (Dec-Jan), Masi Shivrathri (Feb-Mar) and Panguni Uthiram (Mar-Apr) are the festivals celebrated here. Monthly pradoshams are also observed here.

Prayers

This temple is considered as parihara sthalam for marriage related doshas. Those facing delays in marriage due to planetary adversities, pray here lighting 48 lamps for relief. A homam is conducted in the temple on full moon days from 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. especially for those facing delays in marriage. A Kangana (thread) is tied on the wrist of the unmarried  in the Parvati shrine after the homam.

The temple is located at about 1.5 Kms from Thirumanancheri, 3 Kms from Kuthalam Bus Stop, 3.5 Kms from Kuthalam Railway Station, 4 Kms from Mela Thirumanancheri, 9 Kms from Thiruvaduthurai, 9 Kms from Mayiladuthurai Junction Railway Station, 11 Kms from Mayiladuthurai Bus Stand, 11 Kms from Mayiladuthurai, 27 Kms from Kumbakonam and 116 Kms from Trichy Airport. The temple is situated at about 3 Kms northward from Kuthalam on Mayiladuthurai to Kumbakonam route. Town buses are available from Mayiladuthurai to Tiruvelvikudi Via Kuthalam.
