Mayuranathaswami Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Mayiladuthurai Town in Mayiladuthurai Taluk in Mayiladuthurai District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Mayuranathar / Gowri Mayuranathar / Gowri Thandavareesar and Mother is called as Abhayapradhambikai / Abhayambikai / Anjalanayaki / Anjalai. This temple is considered as one of the six temples along the banks of the Kaveri which are considered equivalent to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple.





This temple is considered as one of the temples participating in Saptha Sthana festival of Mayiladuthurai. This temple is considered as one of the Pancha Dakshinamoorthy Sthalams around Mayiladuthurai. This Temple is considered as one of the shrines of the 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams glorified in the early medieval Thevaram hymns. This Temple is the 156th Devara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 39th sthalam on the south side of river Cauvery in Chozha Nadu. Arunagirinathar has praised Lord Muruga of this temple in his Thirupugazh Hymns.

Devotees, on realizing their wishes perform special abishekam to Lord and Mother with vastras. Also, devotees worship Lord Shiva here for relief from Navagraha Doshas.

People take their holy bath in the river during the Aipasi month (October-November) and the first day of following Karthikai month. Lord visits Cauvery each day during this period of 31 days. It is also said that Holy Ganga had her sins washed off with a dip in Holy Cauvery. This day is Aipasi new moon day (Deepavali). A bath in Cauvery on this day cleanses the devotee of all his/her past sins.

The Temple is located at about 1 Km from Mayiladuthurai New Bus Stand, 1.5 Kms from Mayiladuthurai Old Bus Stand, 3.5 Kms from Mayiladuthurai Junction Railway Station, 22 Kms from Thirukadaiyur, 23 Kms from Sirkazhi, 26 Kms from Poompuhar, 30 Kms from Tharangambadi, 35 Kms from Kumbakonam, 112 Kms from Puducherry Airport and 137 Kms from Trichy Airport. The temple is located in the southern part of Mayiladuthurai about a mile from the Kaveri River. Mayiladuthurai is situated on Kumbakonam to Poompuhar route.

Mayiladuthurai is connected by rail with most important towns and cities in South India. Mayiladuthurai Junction railway station is located on the main line connecting the state capital Chennai with Trichy. The Mysuru – Mayiladuthurai Express connects Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, Kumbakonam and Trichy with Mysuru and Bengaluru. There are regular express trains that connect the city with major cities in the state like Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore and Trichy. There are passenger trains that connects Mayiladuthurai with Thanjavur, Trichy, Thiruvarur, Chidambaram and Viluppuram.
