Mari Amman Temple, Ozhugai Mangalam, Mayiladuthurai

Mariyamman Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to goddess Mariyamman located in Ozhugai Mangalam Village in Tharangampadi Taluk in Mayiladuthurai District of Tamil Nadu. The temple is situated on the banks of Uppanar river.




Legends

As per legend, a cowherd noticed his cow was pouring its milk at a particular spot. The cowherd was curious, dug the spot and found an idol of Mariyamman. As the idol came out due to the pouring of milk (Ozhugai) of a cow, the place came to be called as Ozhugai Mangalam.



The Temple

This temple is facing towards east with an entrance arch. The entrance arch has stucco image of Mariyamman. Dwaja Sthambam, Balipeedam and lion, her mount can be found immediately after the entrance arch, facing towards the sanctum. The sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum, ardha mandapam and maha mandapam. The sanctum enshrines an image of Mariyamman. The idol is a Swayambhu Moorthy (self-manifested). Shrines of Seethala Parameswari, Kathavarayan, Pechi Amman, Karuppan, Vinayagar and Nagas can be seen in the temple premises.




Temple Opening Time

The temple remains open from 08.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. and 05.00 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.

Festivals

Chithirai Tamil New Year day (April 14), Panguni Perunthiruvizha (Mar-Apr), Purattasi Navaratri (Sep-Oct) and Thai Pongal (Jan-Feb) are the festivals celebrated here. Theerthavari is celebrated in the banks of Mahimalai river on Aadi Perukku day (18th day of Tamil month of Aadi (Jul-Aug)).

Prayers

Devotees believe that the boils in the body and worries in the mind would be dissolved by dissolving pepper, sugar and salt in the temple tank. Devotees pray here for reunion of families, harmony among couples, prosperity and welfare of future generations. People tie yellow thread in the Neem tree of the temple for wedding boon and tie cradles for child boon.

Connectivity

The temple is located at about 250 metres from Ozhugai Mangalam Bus Stop, 2.5 Kms from Tharangambadi, 6 Kms from Thirukkadaiyur, 16 Kms from Karaikal, 17 Kms from Karaikal Railway Station, 27 Kms from Mayiladuthurai, 34 Kms from Nagapattinam and 167 Kms from Trichy Airport. The temple is situated on Tharangampadi to Thirukadaiyur route.
