Swayambhu Nathar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in Thiruvilayattam Village in Tharangambadi Taluk in Mayiladuthurai District of Tamil Nadu, India. The temple is also called as Thaan Thondreeswarar Temple. Presiding deity is called as Swayambu Nathar / Thaan Thondreeswarar and Mother is called as Mullaivana Nayaki. This Temple is considered as one of the Mada Temples built by Kochengata Chola, an early Chola Emperor.

History

The Temple is believed to be built in 3rd Century CE. It is believed that this temple is considered as one of the Mada Temples built by Kochengata Chola, an early Chola Emperor. The temple was reconstructed in granite by the Chola Emperor Rajaraja Chola I. Thiruvilayattam was called as Perumabalai in ancient period.

The temple is located at about 500 metres from Thiruvilayattam Bus Stop, 3 Kms from Nalladai, 9 Kms from Sembanarkoil, 13 Kms from Mangainallur Railway Station, 16 Kms from Tharangambadi, 18 Kms from Mayiladuthurai, 20 Kms from Mayiladuthurai Junction Railway Station, 20 Kms from Karaikal and 139 Kms from Trichy Airport. The temple is situated on Sembanarkoil to Karaikal route via Nalladai.
