Udhvaganathar Temple, Thirumanancheri, Mayiladuthurai

Udhvaganathar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Thirumanancheri Village near Kuthalam Town in Kuthalam Taluk in Mayiladuthurai District of Tamil Nadu. The Temple is also called as Kalyana Sundareswarar Swamy Temple. Presiding Deity is called as Manavala Nayakar / Arulvallanathar / Arul Vallal Nayakar / Kalyana Sundareswarar / Udhvaganathar and Mother is called as Kokilambal / Yaazhinum Menmozhi Ammai.





This Temple is considered as one of the shrines of the 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams glorified in the early medieval Thevaram hymns. This Temple is the 79th Devara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 25th sthalam on the north side of river Cauvery in Chozha Nadu. This Temple is considered as a Parihara Sthalam for doshas related to marriage. The Temple is also considered as Parihara Sthalam for Raahu and Ketu doshas.

History

The Temple is believed to be built in 6rd Century CE. The temple was completely converted to granite structure by Queen Chembian Madevi, wife of Gandaraditya Chola & mother of Uthama Chola. The temple received royal patronage from Pandyas, Hoysalas and Nayak rulers. There are about 28 inscriptions recorded from this temple. Inscriptions dating back to the reigns of Chola Kings Kulothunga Chola III, Jadavarman Sundara Pandya, Maravarman Sundara Pandyan, Hoysala King Veera Ramanatha and Nayak Kings are found in this temple. Most of these inscriptions records the gifts & grants for the maintenance of the temple, taxes levied, for conducting rituals & festivals, administration activities, feeding brahmins & Shiva Yogis and renovation activities carried out in the temple.

The Temple is located at about 5.5 Kms from Kuthalam Bus Stand, 6 Kms from Kuthalam, 6 Kms from Kuthalam Railway Station, 12 Kms from Mayiladuthurai Junction Railway Station, 15 Kms from Mayiladuthurai New Bus Stand, 17 Kms from Mayiladuthurai, 30 Kms from Kumbakonam and 118 Kms from Trichy Airport. The Temple is situated at about 6 Kms northward from Kuthalam on Mayiladuthurai to Kumbakonam route. Town buses are available from Mayiladuthurai to Thirumanancheri Via Kuthalam. Cabs and bus facilities are available from Kuttalam Bus Stand.
