Adhikesava Perumal Temple, Thiruvattar, Kanyakumari

Adhikesava Perumal Temple, Thiruvattar, Kanyakumari
Adhikesava Perumal Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu located in Thiruvattar in Kanyakumari District of Tamilnadu. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams, the holy sites of Hindu Vaishnavism according to existing Tamil hymns from the seventh and eighth centuries C.E. The Temple is one of the 13 Malai Naatu Divya Desams. Though this Divya Desam is in Tamilnadu, there are no big temple towers that are typical of Divya Desams in Tamilnadu. The temple has been built in typical Kerala style on a three-acre land. All poojas are in Kerala style – Thaanthriga Vithi and the priest is from Kerala as well.

The temple is located in a picturesque setting surrounded on three sides by rivers namely, (River Kothai, River Pahrali & River Thamirabarani). Paraliyar (Pahrali) takes a turn in this place and it is called Vattaru and when the temple of Adhikesava Perumal was created it came to be known as Thiruvattaru. Those on a pilgrimage are advised to worship Lord Adhikesava Perumal before proceeding to Thiruvananthapuram to worship Lord Anantha Padmanabha Swamy. This Temple is older than Padmanabha Swamy Temple at Thiruvananthapuram. The Temple structure is like that of Padmanabha Swamy Temple.

The style and the architecture of this temple is taken as the sample to construct the Padmanabha Swamy Temple. The idol of Adhikesava and Padmanabha are installed in such a way that they face each other. The lord is lying on his snake couch and has to be viewed through three doors. Lord Shiva in the form of Lingam can be seen near the Lord Adhikesava Perumal inside the sannidhi. Sun’s rays fall directly on the Lord for a week in the month of Puratasi and Panguni. This temple is an important center of worship and is referred to as Aadi Anandam and Dakshina Vaikuntam.
