Subramanya Swamy Temple, Kandan Kudi, Thiruvarur
Subramanya Swamy Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Murugan located at Kandan Kudi Village near Peralam in Thiruvarur District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Subramanya Swamy. The Temple is situated on the northern banks of Noolaru River. The Temple is believed to be 1000 years old. Kandan Kudi was also called as Kumara Kudi, Thenkadu and Madhuvanam in earlier times. Saint Arunagirinathar had sung about Lord Murugan of this Temple is his Thirupugazh Hymns. The Temple had its Kumbhabhishekam in 2005.



Legends
Kandan Kudi:
As per the legend, once a cow belonged to the landlord of this village used to return late every day after grazing. He noticed that the cow was milked already. He was confused and want to know the reason behind it. Next day, he followed the cow along with the villagers. They astonished to see the cow was milking by itself near an anthill. Curious Villagers started digging the anthill and found a beautiful Murugan Idol along with his consorts Valli and Deivanai. Villagers with the help of Landlord built the temple for Lord Murugan. Since Kandan himself preferred to stay here. The place is called as Kandan Kudi.
Mother Deivanai performed penance here:
As per legend, Mother Deivanai performed penance here to attain Lord Murugan as her Lord. Indra, father of Deivanai sent his vehicle Iravadha and Bhairavar to assist her daughter. Hence, Elephant can be seen as vehicle in this vehicle instead of Peacock.
Lord Murugan obliged to stay here as per her mother advice:
Mother Sakthi stopped her son from killing demons Ambaran and Amban as they were destined to be killed by Mother Sakthi. She asked her to stay in this place. Lord Murugan obliged to stay here as per her mother advice.
The Temple
The Temple is east facing. There is a big Mandapam immediately after the entrance. A tall Dwaja Sthambam can be found facing the sanctum after the Mandapam. Elephant is the vehicle of Lord Murugan instead of his usual peacock. Presiding Deity is called as Subramanya Swamy. He is gracing the devotees along with his consorts Valli and Deivanai. He is facing east. He is having single face with four hands. He is also called as Kalyana Sundarar as he married Deivanai here. He is in standing posture on Peacock Peedam.



There is a separate shrine for Deivanai in the temple premises. She is facing south. There are separate shrines for Viswanathar and Visalakshi in this Temple similar to Kasi. There are shrines for Bhairavar, Iravatheeswarar, Vara Siddhi Vinayaga and Chandikeswarar in the temple premises. Theertham associated with this Temple is Kandha Pushkarini. Sthala Vriksham is Paneer Tree.


Festivals
Chithra Pournami, Vaikasi Visakam, Aani Uthiradam, Panguni Uthiram, Thai Poosam, Aadi Kiruthigai, Karthigai Somavaram and Margazhi Thiruvadirai are the festivals celebrated in this Temple.
