Devi Thirumani Amman Temple, Anna Nagar, Chennai
Devi Thirumani Amman Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated
to Goddess Sakthi Murugan located at Anna Nagar, well-known locality of Chennai
City in Tamil Nadu. The Temple is situated on the 13th Main Road,
Anna Nagar, Chennai. The temple is situated on the North-Western Corner of the
junction of the Second Avenue and the 13th Main Road.
The Temple
This idol was the only worshipping site with a roof in
Anna Nagar when the Anna Nagar Layout was first formed as the 'West Madras
Neighborhood'. Although, the adjoining lands belonged to the presiding deity,
the idol was in a small temple constructed out of lime mortar and bricks, over
a mud mound of 5 feet height. The temple was actually on a village road
connecting the New Avadi Road and Poonamallee High Road passing through
‘Thirumangalam’ as the area was known. The temple and the village road even
figured in the Survey of India Map of the 19th century. After the
Layout was implemented, it became clear that the temple has to be relocated or
there will be a hindrance to the free flow of traffic in the road and the
disciples cannot have a good darshan of the Goddess.
