Ganga Jadeswarar Temple, Govindhaputhur – Legends

Ganga Jadeswarar Temple, Govindhaputhur – Legends
Once, the place was a dense forest. A Lingam was found from an anthill under a Vilvam Tree. It is believed that the celestial cow Kamadhenu worshipped the Lingam by pouring her milk on the Lingam and offered her prayers.  As the Sanskrit name for cow is Go, this place came to be called Goputhur which later became Govindhaputhur.  This episode is carved in the pillar near the entrance.
This place is also known as Vijayamangalam or Vijayamangai as it is associated with Vijayan (Arjunan).  Arjunan prayed to Lord Shiva of this Temple to get Pasupathasthiram.
