Ammachatram – Legends
Saptharisheeswarar:
It is believed that the Sapta
Rishis (Seven Sages) had worshiped Lord Shiva here and arranged marriage for
the Lord. Hence, Lord Shiva came to be called as Saptharisheeswarar.
Ammachatram is an ancient
village mentioned as Bhairavapuram in Bavishyaotta Purana and later was called
as Sakkuvambalpuram or Ammani Ammal Chathiram and presently as Ammachatram.
Kalabhairava Sthalam:
This
place is a renowned Kalabhairava
Sthalam mentioned in Bavishyaotta Purana. Also, this
place is mentioned as a Sin relieving place, as powerful as
Kasi (Varanasi) because of the presence of Kalabhairava who is blessing
here will give protection from all the eight directions.
Ravana installed and worshipped a Shiva Linga here:
It is believed that there is a
Shiva Linga installed by King Ravana for worship on his way back from Kailash
to Lanka after obtaining a boon from Mahadeva.
