Bhairava Temple, Thiruvadisoolam, Chengalpattu

Bhairava Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Eechankaranai Village near Thiruvadisoolam in Chengalpattu Taluk in Chengalpattu District of Tamil Nadu. The Temple was constructed by Sri Bhairava Siddhantham Swamigal from Nagercoil. The Temple is situated close to Thiruvadisoolam Gnanapureeswarar Temple.

The Temple

This Temple is facing towards east and is circular in plan. The interior is designed like a Shiva Lingam. The circular sanctum is of two levels. The upper level can be accessed through flight of twelve steps. The twelve steps represent the twelve zodiac signs (Rasis). It is a belief that devotees climbing the twelve steps to reach the sanctum will be relieved from the doshas. Padi Pooja is performed on Chitra Pournami day every year.

The upper level of the sanctum enshrines the presiding deity, Bhairava. The idol is enshrined in a transparent glass enclosure. The stairs behind the sanctum to reach the presiding deity is designed in such a way that no devotees show their back while leaving the sanctum. The lower level of the sanctum enshrines the Ashta Bhairavas, Saptha Rishis in the form of stones and Saptha Kannigais in the form of brass lamps.

Shrines of Pancha Mukha Anjaneya, Pratyangira Devi, Subramanya with his consorts Valli & Devasena, Rudra Vinayaga, Vaishnavi Devi, and Naga Rudra Eswara can be seen in the temple premises. Sthala Vriksham is Peepal Tree. A trident is installed in front of it. Lighting lamps or camphor is strictly prohibited in this temple.

Temple Opening Time

The Temple remains open from 06.00 AM in the mornings till 08.00 PM in the evenings.

Religious Practices

The Temple has a unique custom of providing Vaikkarisi as Neivethanam. People cannot predict their end and cannot avoid their sufferings during their end. To avoid the sufferings, one must donate rice as Vaikkarisi during their life time. Hence, people visiting the temple will bring rice and offer it to the Bhairava to minimize the sufferings during their end.
