Legends
Brahma Sastha Form:
Lord Brahmma during his visit to Kailash ignored Muruga as he was a little boy. Muruga intercepted Brahmma and enquired about his position and qualifications. Generally, one who questions the other would be either old in age or one holding a higher position. Here, it was vice versa. While questioning the Creator, Lord Muruga had both his hands on the hip with a senior look and proved that he was more learned than the Creator. Lord Muruga appears in this posture in the temple.
Lord Muruga helped Aandis to quench their thirst:
Later some poor people (Aandi) were worshipping him. A devotee on his pilgrimage stayed here and wanted to have a bath and worship the Lord and asked the Aandis for a river or well. They said there is none such nearby. A little boy came there, took the traveler to a place and punched the earth with Vel at a place. A spring came up and the traveler’s joy knew no bounds. Lord Muruga granted darshan to him and stayed as Lord Balasubramanya.
Kai Kotutha kai (Hand that gave hand):
Murugamaiyaar, a Muruga-devotee who lived in this sacred place was always in meditation of Lord Murugan. Her husband doubted her chastity, cut off her hand. But she continued to be in meditation. Lord Muruga appeared before her and graced her. Her hand got attached and she regained her original physical self.
History
Originally, this Temple was called as Ramalingeswarar Temple (Lord Shiva) by people. Approximately 50 years before, Shrine for Lord Murugan with his consorts Valli and Deivanai & a huge Rajagopuram was built. After that people used to call this Temple as Balasubramanya Swamy Temple.
The Temple
Though the presiding deity is Lord Shiva called as Ramalingeswarar but the temple is famous for Lord Murugan. Lord Balasubramanya is about 4.5 feet height and appears in standing posture. Opposite him is the sanctum of Saint Arunagirinathar. It is of significance to note that all the images except that of Muruga are sculpted in emerald stone. The specialty of this place is the peacock made in emerald stone. On the right side of Lord Muruga is the sanctum of Annamalaiyar and Unnamulai Ambal.

Between them stand Lord Muruga and his spouse Valli hand in hand and grace us – this is a special feature and a rare sight. Santana Srinivasa Temple, Mogappair, Chennai

Santana Srinivasa Temple, Mogappair, Chennai

Presiding Deity is called as Santhana Srinivasa Perumal and Mother is called as Santhana Lakshmi. This Temple is Administrated by The Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments Department.

Etymology
The place was originally known as "Maga-pperu" in Tamil which means "Blessed with a child". Later the name ‘Magapperu’ got colloquially transformed to Mogappair. The name is due to Santana Srinivasa Perumal whose Vigraham / idol was found beneath the temple premises in Mugappair in Chennai. Santana Srinivasa blesses childless couple with children.

History
The area got its name due to this temple. Even though the current temple structure is not old, it is believed the idol of the presiding deity of the temple Santana Srinivasa Perumal is 650 years old. There should have been a small temple earlier. The construction of the current structure of the temple was started in 19th century CE and it got completed only in the beginning of 21st century CE. Except for the main deity - Srinivasa Perumal, all other idols in this temple are new.

Arunachalam Mudaliar, the founder of Santhana Srinivasa Perumal Temple at Mogappair constructed the temple approximately 167 years before. The Lord himself identified about his existence underneath the land through dream experience by Arunachalam Mudaliar. Immediately he dug his patta land and found the present idol (Santhana Srinivasa Perumal). He only installed the idol (Santhana Srinivasa Perumal) and also constructed a small temple.

The Temple
The Temple is having 5 tiered Rajagopuram. Presiding Deity is called as Santhana Srinivasa Perumal. He is housed in the sanctum. He is in the standing posture. The idol is gigantic and is 9.5 feet high. This seems to be a replica of the famous Balaji idol of Tirumala; however, it is taller than that of Balaji idol. Garuda is found facing towards the sanctum.

Mother is called as Santhana Lakshmi. She is housed in a separate shrine in the prakaram. Lakshmi is in the sitting posture and she looks very beautiful. The Utsava idol of Lakshmi is also found in the same shrine. There is a separate shrine in the prakaram where the stone idol as well as Utsava idol of beautiful Andal is found.

The shrine of Sarva Shakti Ganapati can be found on the left side immediately after the entrance. There is a shrine for Veera Bhaktha Anjaneyar where along with the main idol of Anjaneya, the metal (Utsava) idol of Hanuman is also found. Ayyappa and Navagraha are also found in this temple. It is rare to find all these deities in a South Indian Vishnu temple.
