Subramaniyar Swami Temple, Valliyur – The Temple

Subramaniyar Swami Temple, Valliyur – The Temple
The presiding deity here is Subramaniyar and the sanctum enshrines an image of Murugan with that of his consort Valli. The temple has a rock cut sanctum - carved out of a hill and several Mandapams surrounding it. There are also shrines to Natarajar and Dakshinamurthy here. The Saravanapoikai tank is located adjacent to the hill. The diamond studded Vel held by Subramaniyar is of great beauty. In the entire Thirunelveli district, Valliyur has the rare distinction of having the one and only cave temple of Lord Muruga.

A rock named as Pooranagiri was excavated to build this temple. The temple shape is in the form of “Om”. Note that Lord Muruga has four arms and the idol is a replica of the one in Tiruchendur. On his right hand are flowers and his left hand is holding onto his thigh. Next to the sanctum sanctorum is located the Artha mandapam and then the maha mandapam. In the Artha mandapam, Lord Arumuga gives darshan along with Valli – Deivanai. To facilitate circumambulation of the Artha mandapam, the hill has been drilled to set up a cave path till the sanctum sanctorum of Lord Shiva.

In this temple, Lord Shiva as Jayandeeswarar facing West is in a separate shrine with Soundara Nayagi Amman. The Shiva ling faces the west in this temple which is considered very auspicious. Opposite Lord Muruga is placed the idol of peacock which is Lord Muruga’s vehicle (vahanam). The Artha mandapam also has the idols of Vinayaka, Veerabahu and Veera Mahendran. On the right side of the Artha mandapam is a cave. Alongside the entrance of the cave are Vinayaka, Sastha (Ayyappa) and Lord Shiva.

The Murugan temple has 13th century stone carvings. The temple also has a specific sanctum sanctorum dedicate to Valli – consort of Lord Muruga. The maha mandapam has Kasi Vishwanathar, Visalakshi and Shani Bhagwan. There is also Dakshinamurthy (Guru Bhagavan) idol in the temple.  Sthala Vriksham is Vilvam Tree. The beautiful Temple, the temple tank and the Kuravan Malai (Western Ghats) give the town a beautiful look and feel.

Subramaniyar Swami Temple, Valliyur – Legends

Subramaniyar Swami Temple, Valliyur – Legends
Pandya discovered this Temple on a hunting expedition:
Legend has it that this temple was first discovered by a Pandya King who came here on a hunting expedition after visiting the Perumal temple at Thirukkurungudi and that the temple was expanded by his descendants.
People who worshipped Muruga here:
Legend has it that Indra and Agasthiar worshipped Subramanyar here.
Murugan created Saravanapoikai Tank:
Legend also has it that the Saravanapoikai tank was created when Murugan struck his spear to the ground, upon being requested by his consort.
Story behind the formation of Hills:
Village lore has it that Sage Agastya had cursed a merchant called Durlaban in Valliyur when he refused to part with a few morsels of rice saying that he can’t give anything in charity, even if it was for Sage Agastya. The sage cursed that all the rice that couldn’t be of use to someone like him, be as well converted to stone. This is how the hills were formed.
Mahendragiri Hill:
Mahendragiri Hill that finds mention in Sundara-Kandam is located to the west of Valliyur. This was the hill where Sage Parasurama did severe penance.
Valliyur, the place of Valli:
Lord Muruga came to Valliyur immediately after marrying Valli. References are indicated in the Kandapuranam. Valli was so much in love with Lord Muruga that she refused to allow Deivanai in her domain. Deivanai was almost in tears and it was only sage Agastya who consoled Deivanai and took her to Valli and explained to her that Deivanai be treated like her sister. As this place belonged to Valli who seems to have had a dominating nature, it is not surprising that women born in Valliyur are said to be extremely demanding wives after their marriage. They are also extra sensitive. Not a surprise - because it appears Lord Muruga simply pampered Valli.

Legends
India has the reputation of being the home of women praised for their chastity of highest degree. They willingly and unhesitatingly accompanied their husbands in death. Tamilnadu celebrates them as their Goddess. Temples are built for them as the one for Kannagi. Theepachi Amman in Thirunelveli belongs to this noble community. Akkammal residing in Ettayapuram was a staunch believer. After marriage, the couple loved each other heart and soul that they could not live without the other. While she was working in the field one day, she told the shepherds that she would be receiving a message which they did not take seriously.
Meantime, her relatives arrived at the place and asked her to return home with them without giving any reason. Akkammal calmly told them that they were urging her to return home as her husband died by then. They were shocked as it was true. Returning home, she did not cry or weep as ordinary women but stood resolutely to the surprise of kith and kin. She simply said that she was in her husband by soul and would accompany him in his last journey. Relatives could not stop her. Even the ruler of Ettayapuram could not change her mind. She wanted the cremation of her husband on the banks of Tambiraparani.
She also had a dip in the river and joined the pyre and shed her mortal coil along with her husband. Lakshmi, a friend of Akkammal since child hood also joined them in death as she could not bear the separation. Praising Akkammal’s chastity, people built a temple for her then. As Akkammal sprang into the fire (Thee Paichal in Tamil), she was praised as Thee Paintha Ambal which later changed as Theepachi Amman.

Mother is called as Padagalinga Nachiyar. Sthala Vriksham is Vilwa Tree. Theertham is Padagalinga Theppam.

Legends
Lord Shiva granted darshan Chera King & Queen:
The queen of a Chera king wanted to have a round in the jungle here alone. After a long walk, she felt thirsty. She found a spring. Before stepping into the spring, she left her anklets-padagam or Thandai – an ornament worn by women at the feet – on the bank. After drinking water, she could not come to the bank and cried in fear. People working there informed the king who came and rescued the queen.
The anklets left by the queen on the bank were stuck on a bamboo tree nearby. The king cut the bamboo to take the anklet. It bled. The king left the place in fear. He returned the next day with his Guru. He found two Shivalingas in the place of the anklets. A voice said and asked the king to build a temple. The king built the temple.
Lord Shiva granted darshan to the king and wife and also directed them to stay there. They obeyed and spent their days serving the Lord. After sometime, they merged with the Lord.  Idols were made for the king and his wife also and installed in the temple. As they were worshipped by the villagers here as guardian deities, the king was named Chitraputra Dharma Sastha and the queen Padagalinga Nachiyar.
Story of Seven Brother Statues:
There were seven brothers in this region living together with their only sister. A youth belonging to a different caste wanted to marry her. The brothers did not agree to the proposal. The youth came to this temple with the girl chased by the brothers. Sri Chitraputra Sastha appeared before them and suggested a compromise not acceptable to the brothers. The deity simply changed them into statues then. Seven brothers, their sister and the youth are in the temple as statues. One of them is seen with his hand on the head.
The Temple
There are two Shivalingas – Mahalingam and Padagalingam both small in size in the sanctum sanctorum. There is also a small Nandhi the bull vehicle of Lord Shiva nearby. Behind the Lingas are Mother Padagalinga Nachiyar and Chitraputra Dharma Sastha.  Vahanas elephant, horse and Nandhi are in front of the sanctum.  Vinayaka of the temple is also called after the name of the Lord as Padaga Pillaiyar.
Though the presiding deity is Lord Padaga Lingaswami, the temple is more known as Padaga Pillaiyar Kovil. Those who do not know their family deity, consider Dharma Sastha as their family deity.  Special pujas are performed to him on Wednesdays and Saturdays by the devotees. Naga (serpent) idols are placed in the form of Navagrahas the nine planets. Those facing adversary planetary effects pray here.
