Brahmapureeswarar Temple, Thirupattur – Patanjali Jeeva Samadhi
The
Temple Complex also houses the Jeeva Samadhi of the Founder of Yoga, Maharishi
Patanjali. It is located in the inner prakaram adjacent to the Shrine of Lord
Brahma. Patanjali Munivar is credited with developing the Patanjali Yoga Sutra
and is considered by some to be a form of Adisesha - other instances of Adisesha
forms being Lakshmana and Ramanujar. There is a story that Sage Patanjali with
snake legs and author of astrological science attained Siddhi (salvation) in 10
shrines. This is one among them.
It is
believed that he is still alive and continues to write the Yoga Sutras. While
Shiva performs the Ananda Thandava between the horns of Nandi, there are two
saints who witness it - Pathanjali and Vyakrapada. Both their Jeeva samadhis
are found here. Pathanjali was the creator of Yoga Sutra. His Jeeva samadhi can
be found to the left of the Brahma Sannadhi. A covered enclosure has been made
around it convenient for those who want to come here and meditate. The
vibration is extremely powerful here.
