Subramanya Swami Temple, Kangeyanallur – The Temple
This is
a beautiful small temple with some excellent old carvings including a snake and
fish image. The temple has a 5 tier Rajagopuram on the east and a smaller
3-tiered gopuram on the south. The temple walls have some beautiful images of
common people and divinity on the top. Sculptures are artistically engraved in
the gopuram depicting the Kandapuranam and the six Padaiveedus of Lord Muruga. The
temple has two prakarams, two entrances. Vinayaka in this temple is praised as
Sundara Vinayaka.
Presiding
Deity is called as Subramanya Swamy / Kangeyan. The presiding deity Subramanya
is found in a standing posture along with his consorts Valli and Devasena in
wedding form in the sanctum sanctorum. There are special Dwarapalakas (security
men) and an entrance for him. Devotees offer their first worship to saint
Arunagiriar before going to Lord’s shrine. Urchavar is Shanmugar.
There
are shrines for gods Vinayaka, Kasi Viswanatha, Visalakshi, Saraswathi,
Lakshmi, Sun, Veerabhadra, nine lieutenants of Lord Muruga, Naalvar, Nagar, Pamban
Swamy, Arunagirinathar, Dakshinamurthy, Vishnu, Brahma, Durga and Bhairava. Sri
Smitra Chandikeswara also has his shrine here. Theertham associated with this
Temple is Saravana Poigai. This Theertham was created by Kirupananda Variyar. Variyar's
Knowledge centre, where Kirupananda Variyar was cremated is situated opposite
to the temple.
