Devi Karu Maari Amman Temple, Thiruverkadu – Festivals
There
are a number of Pujas and festivals that are organized in the temple, that at
tract crowd from all the neighboring states. The Thaipoosam Latcharchana
and the Poornima Latcharchana are the main occasions. Go puja (worship of cows)
is performed every day in the morning. Archana with Kumkum is performed daily
between 4.30- 6.00pm. On the new moon day every month, a yagna with red
chillies is performed. Eka Thina (single day) Laksharchana is performed on
Thaipoosam (Full moon day in January- February) every year.
Garuda
Seva to Lord Srinivas is performed on the eve of Vaikasi Visakam (eve of full
moon day in the month of May). During the festival, Lord Srinivasa is taken out
in a procession. Aipasi Annabishekam is performed to Mother Devi Karumariamman
in October-November. Aadi Festival in July-August is very famous. Maximum
duration of festivals goes up to 15 days. Rarely in some Shakti temples,
festivals run upto 48 days also.
In this
temple, the festival that begins in the month of Aadi (July-August) continues
for 12 weeks ending with Purattasi month-September-October. On Sundays, abishekam
is performed with 108 pots of milk followed by procession. On the 9th Sunday,
Mother Devi Karumariamman is taken in procession in a palanquin decorated with
flowers. On Masi Magam day in February-March, Amman is taken to Bay of Bengal
for sea bath.
Other
festivals include New Year Celebration – Mid night on 31st December, 19
days Thai Brahmmotsavam in January- February, Chitra Poornima in April-May,
Vaikasi Visakam in May-June, Navarathri in September-October, Skanda Sashti in
October- November and Panguni Uthiram in March-April and Tamil New Year.
