Sakthipureeswarar Temple, Karunkuyilnathanpettai, Nagapattinam
Sakthipureeswarar Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Karunkuyilnathanpettai, an outskirt of Mayiladuthurai Town, in Nagapattinam District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Sakthipureeswarar / Karunkuyilnathar and Mother is called as Anandhavalli. The Temple is considered as Thevara Vaippu Sthalam as Devaram hymns had a mention about this Temple.




Legends
Karunkuyilnathanpettai:
Due to Sati death in Daksha Yaga, Lord Shiva was angry and sent Veerabhadra to destroy Yaga and punish the participants. Due to fear, Indra took the form of Cuckoo and escaped. To pacify Lord Shiva, Indra, in the form of Cuckoo worshipped Lord Shiva of this Temple. Hence, the place came to be called as Karunkuyilnathanpettai.

Karuna Theertham:
A Brahmin due to his ill conduct got afflicted with leprosy. Once, a sage saw his condition and advised to him to take bath in Karuna Theertham. On sage advice, he took bath and got relieved from leprosy.
The Temple
This is a small east facing Temple situated on the banks of Cauvery River. Presiding Deity is called as Sakthipureeswarar / Karunkuyilnathar. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam and is facing east. Mother is called as Anandhavalli. She is housed in a separate south facing shrine. There are shrines for Saptha Mathas, Sakthi Vinayagar, Sakthi Murugan with his consorts Valli & Devyani, Dakshinamurthy, Bhairavar and Chandikeswarar in the Temple premises.




There is a unique shrine housing both Saneeswarar and Suryan in this Temple. Theertham associated with this Temple is called as Karuna Theertham. Sthala Vriksham is Vilva Tree. Sthala Vriksham is considered as Navagraha in this Temple. Two Kaala Pooja is performed in this Temple as per Karana Agama.

The Temple remains open from 06.00 AM to 07.00 and 05.00 PM to 07.00 PM.
Festivals
Shivaratri is the famous festival celebrated in this Temple.
The Temple is considered as Thevara Vaippu Sthalam as Devaram hymns sung by Appar had a mention about this Temple. The Temple is mentioned in 6th Thirumurai in 71st Patikam in 11th Song.
