Agastheeswarar Temple is a
Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Thiruvotriyur, well known
locality in Chennai City in Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Agastheeswarar
and Mother is called as Akilandeswari. Thiruvotriyur is famous mainly
because of the magnificent temple of Thyagaraja (Lord Shiva) and Vadivudai
Amman. This small temple is located on the same street where the temple of Vadivudai
Amman and Thyagaraja is located. Though the Temple is believed to be an ancient
temple, the current structure of the temple seems to be new. This temple comes
under the control of Thyagarajar & Vadivudai Ambal Temple.
Legends
It is believed that the great
saint Agastya visited this temple and hence the deity is called as Agastheeswarar.
The
Temple
This is a small Temple facing
the north direction. Presiding Deity is called as Agastheeswarar. He is also
called as Kubera Lingam. Lingam is small in size and faces the north direction
similar to that of the temple entrance. The wall around the sanctum has the
niche images of Ganesha, Dhakshinamoorthi, Vishnu, Brahma and Durga.
Chandikeswara is found in his usual location. Mother is called as Akilandeswari.
She is housed in a separate shrine located near the sanctum. There are idols of
Selva Ganapati, Subramanya with Valli and Devasena, Surya, Bhairava, Nalvar, Kaliyamurti
Nayanar and Agastya in the inner prakaram. There are also idols of Selva
Ganapati, Nagas, Vinayaka and Murugan in the outer prakaram.

street of famous Thyagaraja Temple, Thiruvotriyur. The Temple is located
at about 100 meters from Theradi Bus Stop, 300 meters from Thyagarajar &
Vadivudai Ambal Temple, 1 Km from Thiruvotriyur Railway Station, 1.5 Kms from Thiruvotriyur
Bus Depot, 3 Kms from Wimco Nagar Railway Station, 11 Kms from Chennai Central
Railway Station, 14 Kms from Egmore Railway Station, 21 Kms from Koyambedu
Mofussil Bus Terminus and 32 Kms from Chennai Airport.
There are buses operated from
here to all over Chennai and also a few limited services which run to various
parts of the Tamil Nadu state. There is a bus available to Parrys corner for
every 10 minutes through different routes. Thiruvotriyur is located at
the Chennai Central – Gummidipoondi suburban line of Chennai. The number of
train services on this route are quite frequent. Thiruvotriyur has two rail
stations, one at Thiruvotriyur and the other at Wimco Nagar. Nearest Airport is Chennai
International Airport located at Meenambakkam.
