Sundareswarar Temple, Annappanpettai – The Temple

This temple is facing towards east with an entrance arch. Balipeedam and Balipeedam can be found immediately after the rajagopuram, facing towards the sanctum. The sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum, ardha mandapam and maha mandapam The artha mandapam and maha mandapam are designed to look like the forehead of a bat (Vovval Nethi Mandapam). Stucco image of Rishabaroodar can be seen above the entrance of the maha mandapam.


Vinayagars can be seen at the entrance of the sanctum on either side in the form of Dvarapalas. Presiding Deity is called as Sundareswarar / Vilwa Vana Nathar and is facing east. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam in a square avudaiyar. Lord is a Swayambu Moorthy (self-manifested). Dakshinamoorthy can be seen on the koshta. Chandikeswarar shrine can be seen in his usual location.


Mother is called as Azhagammai / Sundarambal / Azhagu Vana Mulaiyammai. She is housed in a separate south facing shrine. Her shrine is situated on the right side in maha mandapam. There is a separate shrine for Lord Vilvanathar along with his consort Akhilandeshwari in the prakaram. The Navagrahas are depicted in standing posture without their respective mounts (vahanas) in the Navagraha shrine.


Shrines & Idols of Selva Siddhi Vinayaka, Murugan with his consorts Valli & Devasena, Mahalakshmi, Saneeswarar, Kailasanathar, Bhairavar, Surya, Vinayagar, Ashta Bhuja Bhadrakali and Sage Paraasara can be seen in the temple premises. Theertham associated with this temple is Ambuli Theertham / Chandra Theertham. The Chandra Theertham is situated in front of the temple. Sthala Vriksham is Vilvam tree.
