Parasunathar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Muzhaiyur Village near Patteeswaram in Kumbakonam Taluk in Thanjavur District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Parasunathar and Mother is called as Gnanambigai. The Temple is considered as Thevara Vaippu Sthalam as Devaram hymns sung by Appar had a mention about this Temple. The Temple is also called as Pazhayarai Thenthali. The Temple is situated on the northern banks of T.R. Pattinam River.
Legends
Parasunathar:
As per legend, Sage Parasurama
came to Muzhaiyur to get relief from Brahmmahathi dosha that afflicted him for
killing his own mother as instructed by his father Sage Jamadagni. He
installed a Shivalinga and worshipped here and was relieved from the dosha. Hence,
Lord Shiva came to be called as Parasunathar.

Other daughters of Kamadhenu, Patti worshipped Lord Shiva in Patteeswaram,
Sabhali worshipped Lord Shiva in Pazhayarai Mel Thali and Vimali
worshipped Lord Shiva in Pazhayarai Vadathali.
Muzhaiyur:
Muzhavu is a drum instrument
used for making announcements of royal and official orders also used in temples
for festival and Puja announcements. There were people who were
skilled in using this instrument for singing Veda hymns. These people
stayed in this place and hence, the place came to be called as Muzhaiyur.

Temple Opening Time
The
temple remains open from 06.00 a.m. to 11.00 a.m. and 04.00 p.m. to 08.00 p.m.
Festivals
Akshaya
Tritiya in Chithirai (April-May), Mahashivaratri in Masi (February-March),
Margazhi Thiruvadhirai (December-January), Panguni Uthiram (March-April) and
Tirukarthikai in November-December are the festivals celebrated in the temple. Akshaya
Tritiya festival was conducted in a grand manner during ancient times as the
Kumbakonam Mahamaham festival. Many from the north also thronged here
then. During this festival the Lord would be garlanded with gold
coins.
Literary Mention
The Temple is considered as Thevara
Vaippu Sthalam as Devaram hymns sung by Appar had a mention about
this Temple. The Temple is mentioned in 6th Thirumurai in 70th
Patikam in 1st Song by Appar.

Prayers
Devotees
pray here for excellence in education, removal of obstacles in marriage talks
and child boon. Special pujas are performed during the Tritiya days (3rd
day from New Moon or Full Moon days). Besides the special Akshaya
Tritiya day falling in April-May, devotees make garlands of jasmine flowers
with their own hands and offer them to the Lord. It is said that this puja is
performed as a treatment to indigestion, diabetics, blood pressure etc. Devotees
also make garlands made of the pearls of Pomegranate Fruit (Madhulai) and offer
it to the lord for development of fallow lands, idle money and other still
properties.

1.5 Kms from Patteeswaram
Dhenupureeswarar Temple, 2.5 Kms from Darasuram Railway Station, 5
Kms from Aavoor, 7 Kms from Swamimalai, 7 Kms from Kumbakonam, 7 Kms from
Kumbakonam Bus Stand, 8 Kms from Kumbakonam Railway Station, 35 Kms from Thanjavur
and 92 Kms from Trichy Airport. Patteeswaram is situated
on the Kumbakonam to Aavoor route. Town buses 8, 11, 25, 35, 61, 62 & 67 are
available from Kumbakonam to reach Patteeswaram. Also, mini buses are available
from Kumbakonam and Darasuram. The Temple is situated on Patteeswaram to
Marudanallur Route.
