The Valampurinathar
Temple is a Hindu
temple dedicated to Lord
Siva located in
Melaperumpallam, Nagapattinam District of Tamilnadu. It situated close to Puhar and Thiruvenkadu. The temple dates back to
the Medieval Cholas period. The temple is revered by the Thevaram hymns of Saiva nayanars, 7th century Tamil saint poets & classified as Paadal Petra Sthalam. This is the 44th sthalam on the southern
side of river Cauvery. This is one of the oldest temples of Lord Shiva built by
the King Ko-Chenganan Chola widely known as Maadakkovil. In this temple Lord
Shiva worshiped in the form of a self-manifested Linga. Keezhperumpallam
enshrining Naganathar, located nearby is a Kethu Stalam - one of the 9 Navagraha
Stalams.

The
Temple
This
temple covers an area of about 2 acres. The presiding deity is Shiva. He is
called as Valampurinathar. Shiva here is also known as Dakshina Pureeswarar. His
consort is known as Vaduvakirkanni. Lord is a Swayambu Murthy in the temple.
Lord Vallabha Vinayaka opposite the Mada temple tank blesses the devotees. There
are some epigraphic details about the temple in this part of the temple. Urchavar
is Chandrashekarar. Procession female deity is Padma Nayaki.
Sthala
Vriksham is Male Palm tree (Aan Panai in Tamil). Theerthams of this Temple are
Brhamma, Lakshmi and Sivaganga Theerthams. Lord Bikshadana in the temple is
very handsome and is praised as Arthanareeswarar Bikshadana. The image of
Bhikshatanar here depicted as playing on the veena is one of great beauty.
Appar's Tevaram here (7th century), refers to Shiva holding a veena in his
arms, moving around as Bhikshatanar, and this image is a later Chola (12th -
13th century) artiste's expression in metal, of Appar's description.
There
are two hollows on the Shivalinga. Only perfumed oil and punugu a perfumed
paste are applied on the Lord. During abishek a funnel-Kuvalai is placed
on the Linga. The completely rebuilt stone structure existed even during the
period of Vikrama Chola (1121), as seen from inscriptions here. Images of
Natarajar and Sivakami, Palliyarai Nachiyar, Tandanganni Nachiyar etc. were
added during the period of Vikrama Chola and Rajadiraja II. The bronze image of
Kiradhamurthy here is of great workmanship.
Festivals
Five
worship services are offered each day and the annual festival is observed in
the month of Thai. Bikshadanar festival on Bharani star day in
Thai-January-February; Panguni Uthiram in March-April; Karthikai Mondays in
November-December; Vinayaka Chathurthi; Aadi Pooram in July-August; New Moon
Days in Thai-January-February, Aadi-July-August and Mahalaya in
Purattasi-September-October and Margazhi Tiruvadhirai in December-January are
the festivals celebrated in the temple.
Singers
The
temple is praised in the Thevaram hymns of saints Gnanasambandar and
Tirunavukkarasar and Sundarar. This is the 44th Shiva temple on the southern
bank of Cauvery praised in Thevaram hymns.
Prayers
Those
seeking child boon, facing skin problems, doshas caused by women, obstacles in
wedding proposals and adverse aspects of serpent planets pray in the temple for
relief. Realizing their wishes, devotees ring the temple bell and feed the
poor. People who are cursed by women in previous births face similar treatment
in this life. Some families lost their good life within 20 years of time if
they are not properly disciplined by elders.
For
those people especially male's who have raagu and Venus combination in their
birth chart or Venus and Ketu combination in a female's chart, visiting Melaperumpallam
sri Valampurinathar temple 24 times is important to remove the curse caused by
female's in this birth or previous birth. Those who are having this
astrological planet combinations and running raagu dasa or Venus dasa visiting
this temple is a must.
Minimum
one has to visit 6 times and on atleast on one Friday in raagu kala, one has to
light 108 ghee lamps and has to chant Om Siva
Siva Om mantra by sitting on
yellow cloth specially used for chanting mantra's before Sri Valampurinathar to
get rid of women's curse. If visiting this temple on week days is not possible,
one can visit it on 24 Sundays and can light 108 ghee lamps from morning
11-12am or 4.30 to 6.00 pm.

Melaperumpallam
is located at a distance 5 kms Poompuhar on the Mayiladuthurai road. This
Temple is located at distance of 12 kms from Sembanar Temple, 16 Kms from
Sirkazhi and 20 Kms from Mayiladuthurai. One has to reach Melayur on the way to
Poompuhar from Mayiladuthurai. From there one has to go by auto to visit this
temple. To reach this temple, one has to travel on the Mayiladuthurai -
Tarangambadi road and has to turn into the road which branches off from the
main road to Poompuhar. The temple is 2 Kms from this road junction. Nearest
Railway Station is located at Sirkali and Nearest Airport is located at Trichy.
