Sringandeeswarar Temple, Thiruvur – History
The Temple is believed to be built by the Cholas. The Temple was called as Rishyashringeeswaram in ancient times. The temple had undergone renovations recently. Originally the temple was a brick structure, but it has been converted to stone structure in 1261 AD by a chieftain named Annamalai Udaiyar, the ruler of
Venpaiyur during the reign of Jatavarman Sundara Pandyan 1.
The temple was in good shape and regular poojas are
conducted during 13th century Pandya Kings. There are totally 12 inscriptions
in the temple dating from Jatavaraman Sundara Pandyan I, Telugu Chola King Vijaya
Kanda Gopalan and Vijayanagara Kings. There are also two inscription etched on stones dating to the Vijayanagara Period can be found outside the temple. One inscription belongs to Saluva Thimmaiya Deva records a gift given of coconut groves to the Temple in memory of his father Thippaiya Deva.
The other inscription belongs to Immadi Tirumala
Nayaka, a general of Krishnadeva Raya, records about the gift of lands and gold given to
the temple to build a Madavilagam. The Attaka Pillayar temple on the west side
of river Coovum receives the grant for burning of lamp from the
Shiva temple. The temple was completely reconstructed between 1998 to 2004
in stages.
