Marundeeswarar
Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Thiruvanmiyur in Chennai adjacent to the beach of Bay
of Bengal. Presiding Deity is called as
Vanmikanathar, Vedapureeswarar, Amudheeswarar and Paalvanna Nathar. Mother is
called as Thiripurasundari / Chokka Nayagi / Sundara Nayagi. The temple has two
seven-tiered gateway towers, a huge tank, with the overall temple area covering
1 acre. The Marundeeswarar temple has been a place of curative worship for
people with diseases. The latest consecration of the temple after renovation,
was performed in May 2008.
The
temple has been widely expanded by Chola kings during the 11th century. The temple is
administered by the Hindu Religious and Endowment Board of the Government of Tamilnadu.
It is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, where the three of the most revered Nayanmars (Saivite Saints), Appar and Thirugnana
Sambandar have glorified the temple
with their verses during the 7th-8th century. This is the 25th Paadal Petra Shiva
Sthalam of Thondai Naadu. Arunagirinathar has visited this temple and has sung
praises of Subramanyar here.

The
temple is open from 6.00 a.m. to 12.00 a.m. and from 4.00 p.m. to 9.00 p.m.
Pooja
Timings
Four
services are offered each day (Kalasanthi 7:30 AM, Uchi Kaalam, 11:30,
Sayaratchai 5 PM and Ardhajama 9 pm.
Festivals
Panguni
Brahmmotsavam conducted every year for ten days in March - April. 7th
day car festival, 9th day Vanni Mara Sevai, 10th day the
dance festival for the sake of Sage Valmiki, 11th day float festival. Maha
Shivarathri in February-March, Vinayaka Chaturthi, Skanda Sashti in
October-November, full moon days Kruthika star days, Margazhi Thiruvadirai December-January
and Regular Vilakku pooja is conducted during Aadi month are celebrated with
much fanfare in this Temple.
During
Brahmotsavam, eighteen types of dances involving the festival image of
Thyagaraja is a noteworthy unique feature of this temple. The image is placed
on a specially designed device called Thyagarkanai and taken out on the 10th,
and 11th days of the Brahmotsavam and on Thiruvadirai in the December - January
months and the 18 dances are enacted.

Prayers
Devotees
perform milk abishek to Lord and consume the Vibhuthi (sacred ash) Prasad for
cure from prolonged illness and relief from sins. Circumambulating the Vanni
tree where Lord appeared leads the devotee to salvation. Devotees offer vastras
to Lord and Mother.
