Veeratteswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Vazhuvur Village near Mayiladuthurai in Kuthalam Taluk in Mayiladuthurai District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Veeratteswarar / Gaja Samhara Moorthy / Krittivasar / Gajari / Gnana Sabesan and Mother is called as Bala Gujambigai / Ilamulai Nayaki / Ilankilai Nayagi. The main attraction of the temple is the bronze utsava idol of Gaja Samhara Moorthy.

This Temple is considered as one of the Atta Veerattanam Temples (Atta means eight and Veeram means bravery). The Temple is considered as Thevara Vaippu Sthalam as Devaram hymns sung by Appar had a mention about this Temple. Lord Muruga of this temple is praised in the Thirupugazh hymns of Saint Arunagirinathar. The Temple is situated on the northern banks of Veera Chozhan River. Vazhuvur is considered as the birthplace of Sastha.

History

The temple is believed to be built by Cholas. The bronze sculpture of Gaja Samhara Moorthy was sculpted in the 10^th century CE during the reign of Chola Emperor Rajaraja Chola I.

The temple is open from 6.00 a.m. to 12.00 a.m. and from 4.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m.

Festivals

The Gaja Samhara festival is celebrated in the Tamil month of Masi (Feb-Mar) in a grand fashion. The festival is celebrated for the three days (on the Poosam, Ayilyam and Magha Nakshatras). The actual Gaja Samharam takes place on the evening of the second day. Aadi Pooram (Jul-Aug), 10 days Purattasi Navaratri (Sep-Oct), Skanda Sashti (Oct-Nov), Karthigai Somavaram (Nov-Dec), 3 days Margazhi Thiruvadhirai (Dec-Jan), Masi Maha Shivrathri (Feb-Mar) and Panguni Uthiram (Mar-Apr) are the other festivals celebrated here. Deepavali, Pongal, Tamil & English New Year days, Full moon days and monthly pradoshas are also observed in this temple. Normally, the Theerthavari festival is celebrated once or few times in a year in most of the temples. But, here it is celebrated on every new moon day. Yantra Pratistha puja is performed each day.

The Goddess is believed to be a granter of Santana Bagyam (the fortune of motherhood). Devotees take a dip in Saraswathi Theertham for wisdom and excellence in high education.

The Temple is situated on the Mayiladuthurai – Manganallur Bus route. Devotees need to get down at Neikuppai Vazhuvur Kaikatty Bus stop near Elanthangudi. Veeratteswarar Temple  is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Korukkai Village in Mayiladuthurai Taluk in Mayiladuthurai District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding deity is called as Veeratteswarar and Mother is called as Gnanambigai. This Temple is considered as one of the Atta Veerattanam Temples (Atta means eight and Veeram means bravery). This Temple is considered as one of the shrines of the 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams glorified in the early medieval Thevaram hymns. This Temple is the 80^th Devara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 26^th sthalam on the north side of river Cauvery in Chozha Nadu. Lord Murugan of this Temple is praised by Saint Arunagirinathar in his revered Thirupugazh hymns.

History

The Temple might have been in existence from 6^th century CE. The present structure is believed to be built by the Cholas and was extensively renovated by Vijayanagara Kings & Thanjavur Nayaks. Inscriptions dating back to the reigns of Kulothunga Chola III, Rajathiraja Chola II, Rajaraja Chola III, Bukka Raya and Veera Pratapa Deva can be found in the temple premises. The inscriptions talks about the grants & gifts made to the temple, taxes levied, and renovation activities carried out in this temple.

Korukkai was called as Virudaraja Bayankara Valanattu Kurukkai Nattu Kurukkai or Vikrama Chozha Chaturvedi Mangalam and Lord Shiva was  called as Thiruveerattanamudayar, Kurukkai Udayar & Thirukkurukkai Udaiya Veerattanam Udayar as per the inscriptions in the temple. This temple is maintained and administered by Dharumapuram Adheenam.

People celebrate their 70^th birthdays in the temple. As Lord is in meditation forever, it is difficult to have his darshan. It is not possible to have the darshan when one desires it. Some obstacle would intervene. A devotee, lucky enough to have darshan when he plans, would be blessed with the power of penance, it is believed. Lord forgives anyone praying to him for sins committed unintentionally and unknowingly.

The Temple is also called as Dakshapureeswarar Temple. Presiding Deity is called as Veeratteswarar / Dakshapureeswarar / Yaga Samhara Moorthy and Mother is called as Ilamkombanayal / Balambika. This Temple is considered as one of the Atta Veerattanam Temples (Atta means eight and Veeram means bravery).

This Temple is considered as one of the shrines of the 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams glorified in the early medieval Thevaram hymns. This Temple is the 158^th Devara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 41^st sthalam on the south side of river Cauvery in Chozha Nadu. Saint Arunagirinathar had sung Thirupugazh Hymns on Lord Murugan of this Temple. Hence, this temple is considered as Thirupugazh Sthalam.

The Temple might have been in existence from 6^th century CE. There are about three inscriptions in this temple dating back to the reigns of Pandyan King Sundara Pandya and Vijayanagara King Krishna Devaraya. The place was called as Jayankonda Chozhavalanattu Veezhainattu Rajanarayana Chathurvedhimangalam Pariyalur and Lord Shiva was called as Thiru Veerattana Mudaiyar and Dakshesamudayar as per the inscriptions. The inscriptions talks about the grants & gifts made to the temple, taxes levied, and renovation activities carried out in this temple. The place was called as Thiruppariyalur during ancient times and currently called as Keezh Parasalur. The temple is maintained and administered by the Dharmapuram Aadheenam.

Rudrabhishekam is performed three times in a year in the Tamil months of Aani (Aswathi Star Day), Aippasi (Ashtami Day) and Thai (New Moon Day). Special Poojas & ablutions are performed to the processional idol Yaga Samhara Moorthy for six times on the Tamil new year in the month of Chithirai (Apr-May).
