Ashta Veeratta Sthalams:

As per legend, Lord Shiva is believed to have vanquished demons and evil forces at eight different places and exhibited acts of bravery. These places are collectively called as Ashta Veeratta Sthalams / Atta Veerattana Sthalams. Thirukkadaiyur is the place where Lord Yama was believed to have been kicked and punished to save Markandeya.

Avathara & Mukthi Sthalams of Nayanmars:

Thirukadaiyur is considered as the birth place for Kungiliya Kalaya Nayanar and Kaari Nayanar. Both of them find a place among the celebrated 63 Nayanmars of Shaivism. It is said both of them attained salvation (mukthi) here.

Birthplace of Abhirami Bhattar:

Thirukadaiyur is considered as the birth place of Abhirami Bhattar, the author of Abhirami Andhathi.

Six Sthalams where one can get relieved from the fear of Yama:

It is believed that there are six places where one can get relieved from the fear of Lord Yama. They are;

It is believed that Sage Markandeya worshipped Lord Shiva in 108 Shiva Temples for longevity. Thirukadaiyur is considered as the 108th Shiva Sthalam where Markandeya worshiped Lord Shiva.
