Ashta
Veeratta Sthalams:
As per legend, Lord Shiva is believed to have vanquished
demons and evil forces at eight different places and exhibited acts of bravery.
These places are collectively called as Ashta
Veeratta Sthalams / Atta Veerattana Sthalams. Vazhuvur is the place
where Lord Shiva vanquished the Gajasura (Gaja Samharam).

The
Temple is considered as Thevara
Vaippu Sthalam as Devaram hymns sung by Appar had a mention about this
Temple. The
Temple is mentioned in 6th Thirumurai in 70th Patikam
in 8th Song and 6th Thirumurai in 71st Patikam
in 2nd Song.
Thirupugazh Sthalam:
Saint
Arunagirinathar had sung Thirupugazh Hymns on Lord Murugan of this
Temple.
Hence, this
temple is considered as Thirupugazh
Sthalam.
Birthplace of Ayyapan:
As per
legend, Vazhuvur
is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Ayyappa.
