Kailasanathar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Melacauvery Village near Kumbakonam Town in Kumbakonam Taluk in Thanjavur District in Tamil Nadu. The Temple is situated on the northern banks of River Cauvery. The last consecration ceremony took place on 02 November 2015.

This Temple is considered as one of the Saptha Sthana Temples of Kumbakonam. The Sapthasthana temples of Kumbakonam are;

The Temple

This Temple is facing towards east with three tiered Rajagopuram. Nandi and Balipeedam are housed in a Mandapam immediately after the Rajagopuram. Presiding Deity is called as Kailasanathar. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam. Dandi and Mundi are the Dwarapalakas, guarding the sanctum. Dakshinamoorthy, Lingodbhava and Durga are the Koshta Idols located around the sanctum walls. Mother is called as Karpagambal. She is housed in a separate south facing shrine.

Dwarapalakas Jaya and Vijaya can be found at the entrance of her shrine. Her Shrine is situated to the left side of the sanctum. There are shrines for Siddhi Vinayaga, Dhandayudhapani, Gnana Sambandar, Chokkiyar Ammaiyar, Chandran, Kala Bhairava, Saneeswaran, Suryan, Niruthi Vinayaga, Lord Subrahmanya with his consorts Valli & Deivanai, Sundareswarar & Meenakshi, Chandikeswarar, Navagrahas and Kasi Viswanathar & Visalakshi in the temple premises.

Kodeeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Kottaiyur, a village in the outskirts of Kumbakonam, in Thanjavur District in Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Kodeeswarar and Mother is called as Pandhadu Nayaki / Kanthuga Greedambal. This Temple is one of the twelve famous Shiva temples in and around Kumbakonam participate in the famous Maha Maham festival. This is one of the Saptha Sthana temples associated with Adhi Kumbeswarar Temple,Kumbakonam.

The Temple is one of the shrines of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams - Shiva Sthalams glorified in the early medieval Thevaram poems by Tamil Saivite Nayanmar Tirunavukkarasar. This is the 98^th Devaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 44^th on the northside of river Cauvery in Chozha Nadu. Saint Arunagirinathar had praised Lord Murugan of this temple in his revered Thirupugazh Hymns. The temple is maintained and administered by the Hindu Religious and Endowment Board of the Government of Tamil Nadu.

History

The place was called as Chozheeswaram, Baburajapuram, Koteeswaram, Vilvaranyam and Herandapuram. This temple is believed to have been built by Chola and Pallava kings. Tirunavukkarasar has sung the glory of this shrine along with that of Tiruvalanchuzhi. There are five stone inscriptions in this temple which date back to the periods of Chola kings Rajathiraja and Kulothunga III. The last consecration ceremony (Maha Kumbabhishekam) took place on 26.10.2015 and prior to that on 09.02.1992. This temple is under the administrative control of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of Government of Tamil Nadu (HR&CE).

Amirtha Kalasa Nathar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Sakkottai, a village in the outskirts of Kumbakonam, in Thanjavur District in Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Amirtha Kalasa Nathar / Amirthakadeswarar and Mother is called as Amirthavalli. This temple is situated on the southern bank of the river Arasalaru. This Temple is one of the twelve famous Shiva temples in and around Kumbakonam participate in the famous Maha Maham festival. This is one of the Saptha Sthana temples associated with Adhi Kumbeswarar Temple,Kumbakonam.

The presiding deity is revered in the 7^th century Tamil Saiva canonical work, the Thevaram, written by Tamil saint poets known as the Nayanmars and classified as Paadal Petra Sthalam. Sundarar venerated Amirthakateshwarar in Thevaram, compiled as the Seventh Thirumurai. This is the 185^th Devaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 68^th Sthalam on the south side of river Cauvery in Chozha Nadu. The temple is closely associated with Sakya Nayanmar, one of 63 saints associated with Saivism. The temple is maintained and administered by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu.

History

This temple is also referred to as Kottai Shiva temple. It is believed that earlier this temple was surrounded by a big fortress with tanks (Akazhi) around it. The Akazhi was on both sides of the wall of the fortress. However, only the ruins of the wall and the tank can be seen. In his hymn, Saint Sundaramurthy Nayanar sings about the glory and grandeur of this fort, its halls, this temple and its tanks. It is believed that a lot of Sakkiyas (Buddhist) used to reside here. Hence this place gets the name Sakkiya Kottai which has later been changed to Sakkottai.

This temple was built in granite by the Cholas. Later it was renovated by the Chola King Kulothunga-III and the later expansions are attributed to Thanjavur Nayaks. The Kumbabhishekam of the temple was held on 22 October 2015.  This temple is under the administrative control of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of Government of Tamil Nadu (HR&CE).

There are weekly rituals like Somavaram and Sukravaram, fortnightly rituals like Pradosham and monthly festivals like Amaavaasai (new moon day), Kiruthigai, Pournami (full moon day) and Chathurthi. Vinayakar Chaturthi in the Tamil month of Avani (Aug-Sept), Navaratri in the Tamil month of Purattasi (Sept-Oct), Skanda Shashti and Annabishekam in the Tamil month of Aippasi (Oct–Nov), Thiru Karthikai in the Tamil month of Karthikai (Nov-Dec), Thiruvadhirai in the Tamil month of Markazhi (Dec-Jan) and Shivrathri in the Tamil month of Masi (Feb-Mar) are the festivals celebrated here. This temple is famous for conducting rituals for Sashtiyaptha Poorthy, Bheemaratha Santhi and Sadabishekam (60^th, 70^th and 80^th birthdays respectively).

Adi Kumbeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Kumbakonam Town in Thanjavur District in Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Adi Kumbeswarar / Amutheswarar and Mother is called as Manthra Peeteswari / Mangalambikai / Mantra Peeta Nalathal. The temple is one of 12 Shiva temples connected with the Mahamaham festival, which takes place in Kumbakonam every 12 years.

The presiding deity is revered in the 7^th century Tamil Saiva canonical work, the Thevaram, written by Tamil saint poets known as the Nayanmars and classified as Paadal Petra Sthalam. This Temple is the 143^rd Devaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 26^th sthalam on south of river Cauvery in Chozha Nadu. History

The temple is in existence from Chola times of the 9^th century, and has been maintained by Nayaks during the 15-17th century. The present masonry structure was built during the Chola dynasty in the 9th century, while later expansions are attributed to Vijayanagar rulers of the Thanjavur Nayaks of the 16^th century. Govinda Dikshitar who was the Minister of Raja Achuthappa Nayakkar of Thanjavur, served as the Minister to three Nayaka rulers from 1515 – 1636.

He was in charge of renovating the Adi Kumbeswarar Temple with a new Raja Gopuram and consecration ceremony took place during the reign of Sevappa Nayakkar. There is an idol of Govinda Dikshitar and his wife Nagammal in the Adi Kumbeswarar Temple. The temple is maintained and administered by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu. The last consecration ceremony took place on 12.12.1999.

Prayers

Those coming for the bath in Mahamagam tank bathe in Potramarai tank also. After their bath in the former tank, it is said that the Navakannikas bathed in this tank also. Hence, this is practiced. Kumbamuni Siddha is in the outer corridor of the temple. Devotees pray in Kumbamuni Siddha shrine for relief from the adverse aspects of planets.

Devotees pray to Mother Mangalambikai for distinction in education and seek wedding and child boons, for progress in trade and profession and prosperity. They worship mother with red flowers on Sundays in Aavani month-August-September. Devotees perform abishek, archanas and offer vastras to Lord and Mother.
