Agneeswarar Temple, Chithur, Pudukottai

Agneeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Chithur Village in Ponnamaravathi Taluk in Pudukottai District of Tamil Nadu. This temple is under the control of Archaeological survey of India (ASI).


History

The Temple is believed to be built by Gandaraditya Chola. Chithur was called as Chitrayur in ancient times. There is an inscription dated to the fourth regnal year of Gandaraditya Chola can be seen on the northern wall of the shrine. There is another inscription dated to Rajaraja Chola recording a gift of perpetual lamp to the presiding deity can be seen in the walls of the shrine.

The Temple

The temple is facing towards east and stands over a raised platform. Nandi and Balipeedam can be found facing towards the sanctum in the platform. The temple consists of sanctum, antrala and ardha mandapam. The sanctum is octagonal in shape. The sanctum enshrines the presiding deity, Agneeswarar in the form of Shiva Lingam. Loose sculptures of Brahma, Vishnu, Chandikeswara, Durga, Sapta Matrikas and defaced deities can be seen in the temple premises. Ruins of subsidiary shrines can be seen in the temple premises.

The temple is located at about 6 Kms from Peraiyur, 13 Kms from Pudukkottai, 15 Kms from Pudukkottai Railway Station, 15 Kms from Pudukkottai Bus Stand, 22 Kms from Thirumayam, 27 Kms from Ponnamaravathi, 55 Kms from Trichy Airport and 65 Kms from Trichy. The temple is situated on Pudukottai to Ponnamaravathi route via Peraiyur.

Rajendra Choleeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in Ponnamaravathi Town in Ponnamaravathi Taluk in Pudukottai District of Tamil Nadu, India. The Temple is one of the protected monuments in Tamil Nadu declared by Archaeological Survey of India.



History

The temple is believed to have been built by Rajaraja Chola II in memory of his great grandfather Kulothunga Chola I. There are four inscriptions dating back to the Cholas and Pandyas in the temple. The Chola inscription records the construction of the sanctum and the consecration of the Shiva Linga named Rajendra Choleeswara Udaiyar Mahadevar by a local chieftain. Ponnamaravathi is said to be situated in Puramalai Naadu, in Rajendra Chola Valanadu, a district of Rajaraja Pandi Nadu as per the inscriptions in the temple.

The Temple

This temple is facing towards east. Balipeedam and Nandi housed in mandapam can be found outside the temple facing towards the sanctum. There is a mukha mandapam attached to the main entrance. The temple consists of sanctum, ardha mandapam and maha mandapam. The sanctum enshrines the presiding deity, Rajendra Choleeswarar / Rajendra Choleeswara Udaiyar in the form of Shiva Lingam.



There are niches around the sanctum walls. The southern niche enshrines an image of Gnana Dakshinamoorthy and the northern niche enshrines an image of Brahma. The western niche is empty. Chandikeswara shrine can be seen in his usual location. The goddess Parvathy is enshrined in a south facing shrine in maha mandapam. The bronze image of Somaskanda in this temple belongs to Later Cholas period.

The temple is situated on Pudukkottai to Singampunari route.

Thirukameswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Kali Village in Mayiladuthurai Taluk in Mayiladuthurai District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding deity is called as Thirukameswarar. There are two goddesses namely Abhirami and Balasugambal in this temple. The temple is situated on the southern bank of Pazhavar River.

History

This temple is believed to be built by Chola King Rajaraja Chola II in 11th century CE. An inscription dating back to 1073 CE (21st regnal year) of Chola King Rajaraja Chola II records the grant of land to this temple. This inscription can be seen on the southern wall of the sanctum.


The Temple

This temple is facing towards east with three tiered rajagopuram. Balipeedam and Nandi can be found immediately after the rajagopuram facing towards the sanctum. The sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum, ardha mandapam and maha mandapam. Presiding deity is called as Thirukameswarar and is facing east. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Shiva Lingam.


Vinayaga, Dakshinamoorthy, Lingodbhava, Brahma and Durga are the koshta idols located around the sanctum walls. Chandikeswarar shrine can be seen in his usual location. There are two goddesses namely Abhirami and Balasugambal in this temple. There is a separate south facing shrine for goddess Balasugambal in the maha mandapam. Her shrine consists of sanctum and ardha mandapam.


Her shrine is situated to the left side of the sanctum. The ardha mandapam is designed to look like the forehead of a bat (Vovval Nethi Mandapam). She is four-armed holding lotus & aksha mala in her upper hands and shows varada & abhaya hastha in her lower hands. There is a separate east facing shrine for goddess Abhirami in the temple premises.


There is a separate shrine for Nithya Kalyana Perumal with his consort Adhi Varaha Bhoodevi in the temple premises. Shrines of Vinayaga, Ashtabhuja Maha Kali, Subramanya with his consorts Valli & Devasena, Surya, Bhairava and Navagrahas can be seen in the temple premises. There is a temple tank situated in front of the rajagopuram. Sthala Vriksham is Pavazha Malli.


Festivals

Masi Maha Shivaratri (Feb-Mar) Aadi Pooram & Amavasya (Jul-Aug) and Pournami are the festivals celebrated here. Monthly pradoshams are also observed here.

Prayers

Devotees pray here for marriage boon, business development, relief from menstrual problems and excellence in education.

Swarnapureeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Then Ponparappi Village in Chinna Salem Taluk of Kallakurichi District in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. Presiding deity is called as Swarnapureeswarar and Mother is called as Swarnambigai. The temple is maintained and administered by the Hindu Religious and Endowment Board of the Government of Tamilnadu.

History

The temple was built by King Aragalur Udaiya Ponparappinan Rajarajadevan (Magadesan) of Magadai Mandalam in 13th century CE during the reign of Kulothunga Chola III.

The temple remains open from 05.30 a.m. to 09.30 p.m. continuously without any break.

Avani Pournami (Aug-Sep), Masi Shivaratri (Feb-Mar) and Panguni Uthiram (Mar-Apr) are the festivals celebrated here. Monthly pradoshams are also observed here.

Prayers

People pray here for good farm yields, child boon, mental peace, relief from debt burdens and removal of obstacles in wedding proposals. People suffering from Rahu Ketu dosha, Chevvai dosha, Kalathira dosha and Kala Sarpa dosha perform abhishekam to Bala Nandi for relief. Students perform abishekam to Banalinga with milk mixed with pepper to gain good ranks. Those born of Avittam star perform abishekam to Lord Shiva with honey. Those facing problems from the adverse aspects of Moon and Saturn planets pray in Kaagapujandar Jeeva Samadhi.

Bheemeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Sarkar Manappalli Village in Mohanur Taluk in Namakkal District in Tamil Nadu. Presiding deity is called as Bheemeswarar and Mother is called as Brihannayaki. The temple is situated on the northern bank of Cauvery river.


Legends

Bheemeswarar:

As per legend, Bheema, one of the Pandavas created a Lingam from the sand, installed it here and worshipped sincerely during their exile. Hence, Lord Shiva came to be called as Bheemeswarar.

Manappalli:

As the place is surrounded by sand (Manal in Tamil) on all four sides, the place came to be called as Manappalli.

History

The temple is believed to be built by Cholas. Inscriptions dating back to the reigns of Rajendra Chola can be seen in this temple.

The Temple

This temple is facing towards east. The sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum, ardha mandapam and maha mandapam. There is another entrance on the southern side which acts as an exit door. Presiding deity is called as Bheemeswarar and is facing east. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam. Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbhava, Brahma and Durga are the koshta idols located around the sanctum walls. Chandikeswarar shrine can be seen in his usual location.


Mother is called as Brihannayaki. She is housed in a separate east facing shrine. Her shrine is situated to the left side of the sanctum. Shrines of Narthana Vinayaga, Subramanya with his consorts Valli & Devasena, Navagrahas, Sapta Matrikas, Kala Bhairava, Shiva Lingam, Uma Mahesvara, Gaja Lakshmi and Soundarya Nayaki can be seen in the temple premises. Theertham associated with this temple is Cauvery river. It flows at about 300 metres to the south of the temple premises.

Malaiya Kovil Temple Complex is a group of Hindu Temples located in Malaiya Kovil Village near Nachandupatti in Thirumayam Taluk in Pudukottai District of Tamil Nadu, India. The temple complex mainly consists of two temple groups namely Hill Temples (Mela Kovil) and Foot Hill Temples (Keezha Kovil). Thai Poosam is the most famous festival celebrated here. It attracts huge number of devotees from nearby districts. Thiruppadi Pooja, Panguni Uthiram and Karthigai Deepam are also celebrated here. Girivalam is performed during Pournami in this temple. Devotees circumbulate the hill in Pournami.

Prayers

It is believed that by worshipping west facing Lord Shiva in southern cave temple will relieve one from Brahmmahathi dosha. By worshipping Lord Shiva along with Valampuri Vinayaga on Pradosham days would remove obstacles in their works. Devotees pray to Lord Murugan for child birth.
