Prithvipati Pallipadai Temple is a Hindu Temple located in Thiruppurambiyam in Kumbakonam Taluk in Thanjavur District of Tamil Nadu. This Temple was built in remembrance of Prithvipati, a Ganga King and generals who lost their lives in historical Thirupurambiyam battle. The Temple is now known as Ayyanar Temple. The Temple is situated on the northern banks of Manniyaru River.

The Temple

The Temple is in complete ruins and only the walls of the temple remains intact. The Shiva Linga installed over the Prithvipati Hasti is lost. The Temple has two shrines namely Prithvipati Ayyanar and Vijayalaya Ayyanar connecting to its history. Hero Stones can be seen outside the temple premises. The family tree of Medieval Cholas were written in the walls of the temple.

Ayyanar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Ayyanar located in Sathanur Village near Aduthurai Town in Thiruvidaimarudur Taluk in Thanjavur District of Tamil Nadu. Sathanur is also considered as Avathara Sthalam for Siddhar Thirumoolar, one of the famous 18 Tamil Siddhars and author of Thirumandiram. The Temple is situated adjacent to Thirumoolar Temple. The Temple is situated on the southern bank of Veera Cholan River.

The Temple

This Temple is facing towards east with an entrance arch. The entrance arch has stucco images of Ayyanar with Poorna and Pushkala. A horse idol can be found facing the sanctum. The Sanctum houses Ayyanar along with consorts Poorna and Pushkala. There is an east facing shrine for Madurai Veeran adjacent to the sanctum. There are shrines and idols of Saptha Kannigais, Moolan and Ganapathy in the temple premises. Paintings of Thirumoolar life can be seen in the temple.

Velayudha Swamy Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to village deity Ayyanar located at Thandanthottam Village in Kumbakonam Taluk in Thanjavur District of Tamil Nadu. This Temple is actually dedicated to Village deity, Ayyanar but the villagers consider him as Lord Murugan.

Legends

The village is mix of Hindus and non-Hindus living peacefully abiding the main deity Velayudaswami. In recent years a house in the Agraharam was sold to a non-Hindu. During 3^rd day of the Utsavam, when the Swamy was passing by his residence, he performed disrespectful activities. The moment Swamy passed by his residence, he fell down with stroke and was shouting for help. People helped him and educated him about the power of Velayudaswami. He vacated the house the same night and went to his home town. People in the village still remembers this afresh and abides by Swamy for every act.

The Temple

This is a small east facing Temple. Usually Ayyanar, the village deity is used to be placed at outskirts of Village. But here at Thandanthottam, Ayyanar is present in the middle of the village. He is called as Velayudha Swamy / Malayala Sastha by the villagers. Even though the presiding deity is Sastha, people worship him as Muruga (Velayudha Swamy) accompanied by Valli & Deivanai. Villagers have kept a spear on his hand & a peacock at the base to relate Sastha to Lord Murugan. Sastha right hand is showing Abhaya Hastha.

An elephant and Balipeedam, base for offering sacrifices are located in front of the sanctum. There is another Ayyanar is present along with Poorna & Pushkala outside the Mandapam. He keeps a whip at his right arm. Idumbam and Saptha Mathas are present in this temple. Stucco idol of a horse is located outside the temple facing the sanctum.

10 days Annual Chithira festival is most famous festival celebrated here.

Villayuthamudaya Ayyanar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Sastha, a Village Deity located at Kochadai, a suburb of Madurai City in Madurai District of Tamilnadu. The Temple is also known as Muthaiya Swamy Temple. This Temple is believed to be belong to Pandya period.

Legends

Lord Shiva’s play at Kochadai:

The epic speaking the 64 blessingful events of Lord Shiva has a mention about Kochadai. With a view to take an old lady Vandhi by name, Lord Shiva caused heavy floods in River Vaigai. While one in each family was demanded to repair the breaches caused by the flood, as Vandhi had no one to offer for the job, Lord Shiva himself came to her rescue offering himself for the job, taking the pudding Vandhi was selling for his wage.

King Pandya, dissatisfied with his work caned him in anger – Kovichu Adi – in Tamil. The place also came to be known as Kovichu Adi which in course of time changed to Kochadai. There is a Chokkanatha temple near this place. It is said that this is the original place from where Mother Meenakshi graced devotees.

Muthiah Koil:

Muthiahswami came to Aiyanar in the earlier days looking for asylum. Later he became famous. As he became popular this place came to be known as Muthiah Koil.

Sage Patanjali performed penance here:

It is believed that Sage Patanjali performed penance here under the Tamarind Tree.

The Temple

This is an ancient temple belonging to the Pandya period. Presiding Deity is called as Villayuthamudaya Ayyanar since he is seen with a bow which is a rare posture. He is considered the guardian of the Madurai border in this direction and there are such Guardian temples for Madurai city in each direction. People of all communities worship Aiyanar as their Kuladevatha. As Aiyanar is very powerful, as a courtesy, no horse or carts drawn by horses would not cross this area.

The devotee is greeted with Villayudham Udaya Aiyanar (Aiyanar with a bow) on a horse and Muthiah with the pancha Bhoodas. Next is seated the white elephant gifted to Aiyanar by Indira. Aiyanar graces in the sanctum sanctorum with his consorts Pooranai and Pushkala. Shenbagavalli Aiyanar with Pooranai and Pushakalai discovered in the Shenbaga garden of king Shenbaga Pandian also graces near the sanctum. The white elephant and the horse are his vahans-vehicles.

There 21 deities in the temple, Aiyanar with a bow, Muthiahswami, Karupusamy, Agni Veerabhadrar, Karuppayi Amman, Sangilikaruppu, Kaluvadikaruppu, Meiyandi Amman, Nagappaswami, Sannasi, Aadipoosari, Pechiamman, Muthukaruppuswami, Irulappaswami, Veeranaswami, Rakkayi Amman, Irulayee Amman, Chappani, Sonai Muniyandi and Badrakali.

There are statues of the three Tamil kings, Chera, Chola and Pandya also. Karuppuswami and Muthiah shrines are at the right and Nagappaswami on the left of Aiyanar. There are statues for the three Tamil kings, Chera, Chola and Pandya and idols for Saptha Kannis the seven maidens. Theerthams associated with this Temple are Vaigai River and Azhagar Temple Theertham.

Sthala Vriksham is Tamarind Tree. This Tamarind tree is described in Tamil as Puli Aayiram, Pondu Aayiram meaning that there would be thousands of holes in the tree. The antiquity of the tamarind tree date back over 2000 years. It is believed that Sage Patanjali performed penance here. The tree is worshipped by devotees for removal of Nagadoshas – adverse snake aspects, for wedding boon and for child boon. It is surprising that even when some long and strong branches of the tree fell down due to ageing, no damage was caused to the temple.

Temple Opening Time

The temple remains open from 11.00 a.m. to 01.00 p.m. and 04.00 p.m. to 09.00 p.m.

Festivals

Mahasivarathri is celebrated for three days in the month of Masi, February-March. The other festival in Purattasi (September-October) is celebrated only by the villagers of Kochadai on getting the permission from a lizard sound from a palm tree in the month. If the approval is not obtained, the festival would be postponed to the next year. The tradition is followed even now. The Soolattu Puja festival for Rakkayi Amman and the Pavadai puja festival for Muthiahswami by the family trustees are very famous for all their pomp and splendour. This is a Murayeedu (submission) temple.

Prayers

For removal of Naga Dosha, devotees pour milk to Nagamma under the tamarind tree. Those seeking wedding boon tie Mangal Sutras and those seeking child boon tie cradles with Saris in the tree. Devotees pour milk to Nagamma on realizing their wishes.

Kadai Pillai Ayyanar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Sastha located in Melur Village near Srirangam Town in Trichy District of Tamilnadu. The temple is more than 2000 years old. The temple is situated on a serene outset where a crossover bridge is placed amidst the River Cauvery.

Legends

Kadaipillai Ayyanar:

The legend has it that, many hundred years ago a small bird called Kadai Kuruvi, used to take bath in the river and sit on a particular mound every day without fail. People of this region were amused by its behavior, so, one day they started digging the mound and were startled to find the statue of Ayyanar in yogic posture. After their encounter people named the Ayyanar as Kadaipillai Ayyanar, as it was found by Kadai bird. Later on, they erected a small temple for this god and revere it as their guardian angel.

Huge effigy of elephants and horses:

Yet another fascinating thing about this temple is that, once the king Karikala Cholan went in this area in search of perfect spot to build Kallanai dam. As he and his army men reached this temple, none of their elephants and horses moved. Suddenly one of the soldier got possessed by Ayyanar, and he said that, “I’m fond of your elephant and horses, if you give me few of these, I will help you in your search”, hearing this Karikalan readily accepted to satisfy Ayyanar’s wish and later on, all their elephants and horses started moving. As per he said, Karikalan built a huge effigy of elephants and horses before Kadai pillai Ayyanar, still now the statues are there.

The Temple

This temple is small but lovely, sitting majestically on the banks of River Cauvery. People from nearby village visit this temple before commencing long journeys or any festivals. The magnificent sculptures of an Elephant and a Horse stands right at the entrance stirring our spiritual focus to the deity. Lord Ayyanar is worshiped here as the main deity. This Lord is considered as the custodian deity of Melur inhabitants.

Just opposite to the shrine of Kadaipillai Ayyanar, there is a statue of Karuppanna swami. This statue is known for its fierce look, the eyes of this god is embellished with a precious stone, which seems to look at you directly. There is small statue of Lord Ganesha near Kadai pillai Ayyanar. Vegetarian food is offered to kadai pillai Ayyanar whilst goats, and hens are offered to Karuppanna Swami.

Shrines of Manavala Mamuni, Ekambra Nadhar, Kamakshi Amman, Katha Parimanachami, Chivandhiyandi Konar, Madurai Veeran and Periyannachami can also be found in this Temple. The priests of this temple belong to one family (Konar) and other than them no one does pujas to the God. They believe that Ayyanar himself chose this family to do his daily rituals.

Festivals

Every year a special festival takes place in this temple, people having Kadai pillai Ayyanar as their guardian deity must attend this at any cost. At the end of the festival, the chamiadi (prophet) of this temple get possessed by the Ayyanar and tells the date of next year’s festival.

Poo Choridal (Shower with flowers) is celebrated on 18^th day during the Tamil month of Aadi (Jul-Aug). The lamp festival is celebrated on the last Friday of Adi month. Special Poojas are performed on Poornima, Tuesdays, and Fridays.

Devotees pray here for relief from poverty, illness & mental agony, reunion of those separated due to evil effects, child boon, relief from speech impairments and longevity of their husbands. People also worship Mother Kali to punish those who did wrong to them. There is a unique form of prayer practiced in this temple. Those who are blamed wrongfully for the crimes which they never committed come here and cut a coin and put in the sanctum. It is believed that by doing this procedure, the real culprits will be punished soon.
