Nagabharaneeswarar Temple, Melaiyur, Chengalpattu

Nagabharaneeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Melaiyur Village in Thiruporur Taluk in Chengalpattu District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding deity is called as Nagabharaneeswarar and Mother is called as Periyanayaki. The temple is considered as Rahu & Ketu parihara sthalam.

Legends

As per legend, Sage Agastya visited this temple and worshipped Lord Shiva here.

History

The temple is believed to be built by Chola Emperor Rajaraja Chola (947 CE – 1014 CE) as per an inscription found in this temple. The temple was in dilapidated stated in 2002. The locals with help of philanthropist rebuilt this temple and consecrated in 2008.

The Temple

This temple is facing towards east with three tiered rajagopuram. Balipeedam, Dhwaja Sthambam and Nandi can be found immediately after the rajagopuram facing towards the sanctum. The temple consists of sanctum, antrala, maha mandapam and mukha mandapam. Presiding deity is called as Nagabharaneeswarar and is facing east. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Shiva Lingam. Lord is a Swayambhu Moorthy (self-manifested).Nardana Ganapathy, Dakshinamurthy, Vishnu, Brahma and Durga are the koshta idols located around the sanctum walls.

Chandikeswarar shrine can be seen in his usual location. The vimana, structure over the sanctum is in the form of Gajabrusta, the shape of an elephant in its sitting posture. Mother is called as Periyanayaki. She is housed in a separate south facing shrine. There is a shrine for Kasi Viswanathar with his consort Visalakshi adjacent to the sanctum. There is a shrine for Varadaraja Perumal with his consorts Sridevi and Bhoodevi in the temple premises. Garuda can be seen facing this shrine.


Shrines of Valampuri Vinayaka, Anjaneya, Krishna with his consorts Rukmini & Sathyabama, Ayyappan, Murugan with his consorts Valli & Devasena, Mahalakshmi, Agastya, Lalithambigai, Tripura Sundari, Brahma with his Saraswathi, Chitragupta, Nataraja, Sarabeswarar, Bhairavar, Dattatreya, Sapta Matrikas and Navagrahas with their respective consorts can be seen in the temple premises. The temple tank is situated behind the temple. Sthala Vriksham is Tamarind Tree.


Festivals

Krithikai, Sashti, Pradosham and Pournami are the festivals celebrated here.

Prayers

This temple is considered as parihara sthalam for Rahu and Ketu doshas. Devotees pray here to remove obstacles in marriage alliances and for child boon.

Bhoothagireeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Sirudavur Village in Thiruporur Taluk in Chengalpattu District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Bhoothagireeswarar / Palvannanathar and Mother is called as Vedavalli / Aaranavalli. The Temple is situated on Thiruporur to Thirukazhukundram route.

History

The Temple is believed to be built in 8th century CE by Pallava Dynasty. The temple received extensive patronage from Rajaraja Chola I, Kulotunga Chola II, Kulotunga Chola III, Vijayaganda Gopala Choda, Veerapandya, Sundara Pandya, Raja Narayana Sambuvarayar and Vijayanagara Kingdom. The inscriptions of the Kings talk about gifts, grants and renovations carried out in this temple.

Maha Kaleeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Pazhayanur Village in Madurantakam Taluk in Chengalpattu District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Maha Kaleeswarar and Mother is called as Maragathavalli. The Temple is situated on southern banks of Palar River.


The Temple

This Temple is facing towards east with a dilapidated entrance arch. The pillars and foundations of the arch can be seen. Shrines of Murugan and Ganesha can be seen at the entrance arch. These shrines are of recent origin. Nandi and Balipeedam can be found facing the sanctum though a hole. The Temple consists of sanctum, ardha mandapam, maha mandapam and open mukha mandapa.


Presiding Deity is called as Maha Kaleeswarar and is facing east. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam. Lord is a Swayambhu Moorthy (self-manifested). Thiruvaleeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Siruvanjur Village in Sriperumbudur Taluk in Kanchipuram District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Thiruvaleeswarar and Mother is called as Thirupurasundari.

The Temple

This Temple is facing towards east with a dilapidated flat Rajagopuram. This temple is in complete ruins. Nandi and Balipeedam can be found immediately after the entrance. Nandi is facing Lord Shiva through a hole in the wall. The Sanctum Sanctorum consists of Sanctum, Ardha Mandapam and Maha Mandapam. The Sanctum and Ardha Mandapam are in ruins while only walls of Maha Mandapam remains.


Lakshmi Narayana and Lord Murugan can be seen at the entrance of the Sanctum. Presiding Deity is called as Thiruvaleeswarar and is facing east. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam. There are no Koshta idols in the outer walls of the sanctum. Chandikeswarar Shrine can be seen in his usual location.


Mother is called as Thirupurasundari. She is housed in a separate south facing shrine. Her shrine is situated on the left side of the sanctum in Maha Mandapam. Her shrine consists of Ardha Mandapam and Sanctum. Idols of Vinayagas and Murugan can be seen in the temple premises. There is a huge pond in front of the temple. There is also an ancient well present within the temple complex.

Vidya Vineetha Pallava Parameswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Kooram Village near Kanchipuram City in Kanchipuram Taluk in Kanchipuram District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Vidya Vineetha Pallava Parameswarar and Mother is called as Kamakshi. This Temple is considered as the first temple in Tamil Nadu which follows Gajabrusta Construction. This Temple is considered as one of the 108 Shiva temples mentioned in Kanchi Puranam.



Legends

It is believed that Lord Rama and Sage Gurureswara had worshipped Lord Shiva at this temple.


History

The temple was built by Vijaya Vineetha Pallava, a relative of Pallava King, during the reign of Parameswara Varma Pallava I (670 – 695 AD). There are about nine inscriptions belonged to the Pallava Kings and Rajaraja Chola I. these inscriptions talk about gifts, grants, reciting Mahabharata epic and renovation activities carried out in this temple. The Temple had been extensively received patronage from Parameswara Varma Pallava I, Rajasimha Pallava, Nandi Varma Pallava and Nripatungavarma Pallava and Rajaraja Chola. The Kanchi Puranam mentions this place as Koorma Gramam.

History
The Temple was built by Parantaka Chola. The place was called as Thiruvirarkundram and Thirunarkundram and Lord was called as Thirumaadathu Koonanar and Sadanandar as per the inscriptions dated to Parantaka Chola period. As per one of the inscriptions in the Temple, the village was also called as Thinnakonam and as per another inscription, was called as Thinnakunam.
