18 Siddhar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Maha Meru and 18 Siddhars, located at Madambakkam near Tambaram in Chennai, Capital City of Tamil Nadu. The main shrine enshrines Maha Meru, the great divine mountain. The Goddess Lalita Tripurasundari is installed within the Meru idol. It is believed that Sadasivam is present in invisible form inside the main shrine. All the famous 18 Siddhars are found in separate shrines in the outer prakara. This temple is called as Universal Shrine was constructed as instructed by the Sathguru Seshadhri Swamigal of Thiruvannamalai.

Mr. KVLN Sharma, a devotee of Sri Seshadri Swamigal (a prominent Siddhar), constructed this 18 Siddhar temple at Madambakkam, according to the instructions he had obtained from his guru, Sri Seshadri Swamigal. This temple is a very vibrant one, and is also considered as one of the Navagraha Parihara Sthalam. Those who are unable to visit the Navagraha temple at Kumbakonam, can pray at this temple to get their Doshams (problems caused by the Navagrahas) rectified.

Temple Opening time

The Temple remains open from 06.00 am to 11.30 am and 04.00 pm to 08.30 pm.

Festivals

Mahasivarathri in Masi (February-March), Margazhi Tiruvadhirai in December -January), Panguni Uthiram in March-April and Tirukarthikai in November-December are the festivals celebrated in the temple.

The Temple is located at about 100 meters from Madambakkam Shivan Koil Bus Stop, 3.5 Kms from Rajakilpakkam Bus Stop, 9 Kms from Tambaram Bus Stand, 7 Kms from Tambaram Railway Station, 14 Kms from Velachery Railway Station, 14 Kms from Meenambakkam Metro Station, 30 Kms from Chennai Central Railway Station, 32 Kms from Egmore Railway Station and 15 Kms from Chennai Airport.

The temple is situated at about 7 Kms from Tambaram in Chennai. The devotee should get down at the Rajakilpakkam bus stop on the Velachery road, take the bifurcation. The temple is 3.5 Kms from here. There are no convenient bus facilities from Tambaram. Buses are available only at specific hours. Bus Nos 51G & 51K from Tambaram will take you to this Temple. Magam Star days, Panchami, Sashti, Ekadasi, Dwadasi, Pradosham and monthly Shivarathri are the festivals celebrated here with much fanfare.

Prayers

Naturally, Magam people worship here for relief from adverse planetary problems. Special pujas are performed for Lord and Mother on Masi Magam festival day. For remedy from illnesses, devotees light ghee lamps. Those facing Vasthu problems in their houses, also worship here. Devotees perform abishekam and offer Vastras to Lord and Mother.

Pagalavadi Shiva Temple & Siddhar Peedam is located at Karattampatty Village near Pagalavadi in Trichy District of Tamilnadu. Presiding Deity is called as Ekambareswar and Mother is called as Kamakshi Amman. Pagalavadi is situated on the northern bank of river Cauvery.

Legends

This place was known as Jamuna Vanam (Naval Trees). This place was surrounded by mountains having small caves. It is believed Siddhars engaging themselves in the services of Lord Shiva lived in these caves. It is believed that this temple was built by them. With the invasion of outside forces, the temple was destroyed. As years rolled on, the local population tried to rebuild the temple. Even queen Mangammal know the glory of this Shiva peetam and has visited the temple, gifted lands and money of its welfare and built Yatrikar mandapams.

The peetam appeared in the dreams of many citizens of the local community. A divine prasannam (Holy prediction) by the people proclaimed that Shiva peetam was created by the Siddhars and the pooja articles of the temple are buried in a well. The declaration proved to be true and the Shiva peetam resembled the facts of its classical nature with the worship of Siddhars.

The Temple

The temple is made of hard polished stones and fine architecture. Presiding Deity is called as Ekambareswar and Mother is called as Kamakshi Amman. The sanctum sanctorum of Lord Shiva is a round construction, decorated by lotus, surrounded by eight elephants and eight serpents, saints, rishis. The wall has the pictures of all the 12 (Rasis) and 27 (Stars) the construction is like mount Meru where lord Shiva blesses on everyone with his divine grace.

There are also basements (Peetams) for lord Vigneshwara, Muruga, Vishnu and Parasakthi. There is tank in the temple with 1008 madams to illuminate with lights. It is believed that Sitadevi took her bath in this holy tank before falling into fire, as per the orders of Lord Rama. On 15.5.2009 the consecration of the temple was performed. It was followed by (kooda Muzhukku) on 15.5.2011.

History

The original temple was built by the Tamil Kings of Sangam period as indicated in the Purananuru. The inscriptions found in Thirumuruganatha Swamy Temple, Thirumuruganpoondi places the origin of the temple in the 12^th century CE. M. M. A. Chinnappa Thevar, famous yesteryear filmmaker made several contributions for the betterment of this temple.

Festivals

10 days Brahmotsavam is celebrated with Thaipoosam in January-February. The wedding festival is celebrated in the morning of Thai Poosam day and a car festival is celebrated in the evening. Lord is taken in procession on elephant vahana during the car festival. The Lord also comes in procession every day in golden chariot. Devotees carry 108 milk pots to the Lord on the Vaikasi Visakam day in May-June. Special pujas are performed here on the Aadi Perukku day (18^th day of Aadi month (Jul-Aug)). Chithra Pournami, Vaikasi Visakam, Aadi Kiruthigai, Aippasi Sashti and Thiru Karthikai are the other festivals celebrated here.

Literary Mention

Lord Murugan of the temple is praised by Saint Arunagirinathar in his revered Thirupugazh hymns. The temple also finds mention in the Perur Puranam of Sage Kachyapar.

Prayers

Devotees pray here to remove obstacles in marriage alliance and for the welfare of children. They tie Mangal Sutras and cradles in the tree here. The sacred ash used in the puja of Pampatti Siddhar is given as prasad to the devotees. Devotees suffering from naga dosha and poisonous bites consume it with water for cure. Devotees suffering from skin problems apply it on body for cure. Devotees light ghee lamps in the shrine of Pampatti Siddhar and offer white flowers with sweet nivedhanas for relief from naga doshas and for obtaining mental peace. Devotees believe that a dip in the Marudha Theertham and Skanda Theertham brings forth health and wealth to devotees.
