Shiva Vishnu Temple is a group of Hindu Temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and Vishnu located in Kondamangalam Village in Chengalpattu Taluk in Chengalpattu District of Tamil Nadu. The temples are believed to be built in 7^th century CE by Pallavas but the temples have been lost completely. The villagers dug out the idols from the ground and built the temples recently.

The Temples

There are two temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu located adjacent to each other. Both the temples are facing towards east and consists of sanctum, ardha mandapam and mukha mandapam. The sanctum of the Shiva shrine enshrines the presiding deity, Esana Dharbaranyeswarar in the form of Shiva Lingam. His consort, Pranambigai is housed in a separate south facing shrine.

Her shrine is situated in the mukha mandapa of the Shiva shrine. Nandi and Balipeedam can be found facing towards the Shiva shrine. Chandikeswarar shrine can be seen in his usual location. The sanctum of the Vishnu shrine enshrines an image of Kariya Manicka Perumal with his consorts Sridevi & Bhoodevi. Garuda can be seen facing towards his sanctum. There are two temple ponds associated with these temples.

Shiva Vishnu Temple is a Hindu Temple located at Velachery, well-known locality of Chennai City in Tamil Nadu. The Shiva Vishnu Temple houses Lord Sundareswarar with his consort Meenakshi and Lord Vishnu as Kodanda Ramar. There are shrines and Idols for Brahma, Dakshinamurthy, Durga, Valampuri Vinayagar, Siddhi Vinayagar, Narthana Vinayagar, Ayyappan, Anjaneyar, Navagrahas, Lingodhbava, Chandikeswarar, Andal and Garudazhwar in the Temple premises.

Jalanarayanan Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva located in Kakkalur, a suburb of Thiruvallur Town in Thiruvallur District of Tamilnadu. This temple is also called as Shiva Vishnu temple because these two Lords are the presiding deities here. Reclining Dharshan of Lord Vishnu in this Temple is similar to Jala Narayana Temple of Kathmandu in Nepal.

The Temple

This temple is also called Shiva Vishnu temple because these two Lords are the presiding deities here. The entrance gopuram is big and exquisite. It is painted white with beautiful idols. On entering is an open space and then is the entrance. On either side of the entrance are the two guarding deities. Entering into the temple on the left side is the shrine of Lord Ganesha and next to his shrine is the shrine of Lord Ayyappan.

Next is a small shrine for Lord Krishna with his consorts Rukmini and Bhama. Behind the Krishna shrine is the shrine of Lord Ram along with Seetha, Lakshman and Anjaneyar. Then comes the shrine of Lord Srinivasa and goddess Padmavathy in a separate shrine. Next is the shrine of Lord Shiva called as Pushpavaneswarar. It’s quite a big one since he is the presiding deity. Here Lord Shiva is in the form of a Linga.

Then is the shrine of Poonkuzhali Thayar. If we go around the shrine of Lord Shiva there are many small shrines for Lord Muruga, Lord Anjaneyar, Lord Ganesha, Lord Bairavar and the shrine for Navagraha. Adjacent to this Lord Shiva shrine is the shrine for Jalanarayanan. There is an opening in the compound which leads to the shrine.

It is this idol which makes this temple famous and gives the temple its name. Lord Narayanan here is on his snake bed along with his consort. The arrangement is just like the Lord residing in his heavenly abode Vaikunta. This temple is quite a new temple but maintained well and is always neat and clean. Also since both Shiva and Vishnu can be prayed in the same place it is very famous. There are 44 shrines in this temple.

Bheemeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Athalayur Village in Nagapattinam Taluk in Nagapattinam District of Tamil Nadu. The Temple

This Temple is facing towards east. Nandi and Balipeedam can be found facing towards the sanctum. The sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum, ardha mandapam and maha mandapam. Presiding Deity is called as Bheemeswarar and is facing east. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam. Lord is a Swayambhu Moorthy (self-manifested). Mother is called as Ananda Nayaki.

She is housed in a separate south facing shrine. Her shrine is situated in maha mandapam on the right side.  There is a separate shrine for Varadaraja Perumal in the temple premises. He is gracing the devotees along with his consorts Bhoomidevi and Neeladevi. It is said that the idols belonged to an ancient Vishnu temple once existed close to this temple.

There is a unique Swayambhu Vinayagar can be seen in this temple. It is said that this Vinayagar is naturally formed by the roots of the Athandai plant. People pray to this Vinayagar for better harvest. Idols of Vinayagar, Murugan, Nataraja and Dakshinamoorthy can be seen in the temple premises. Theertham associated with this temple is Thamarai Kulam (Lotus tank).

Festivals

Monthly Pradosham and Shivarathri in February-March are the festivals celebrated in the temple.

Devotees pray to Lord Shiva to regain their position, power and wealth. People worship Goddess Parvathy for reunion with their estranged partners. People pray to Swaymbhu Vinayaga for good harvest.

Navaneetheswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Sikkal Town in Nagapattinam Taluk in Nagapattinam District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Navaneetheswarar / Vennai Nathar / Vennai Piran / Vennai Lingeswarar and Mother is called as Velnedunkanni / Satyaayadhakshi. Though it is a Shiva Temple, it is more famous for Lord Murugan. The Temple is also famously called as Sikkal Singaravelan Temple. This Temple is considered as one of the Mada Temples built by Kochengata Chola, an early Chola Emperor.

This Temple is considered as one of the shrines of the 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams glorified in the early medieval Thevaram hymns. This Temple is the 200^th Devara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 83^rd sthalam on the south side of river Cauvery in Chozha Nadu. Lord Murugan of this Temple is praised by Saint Arunagirinathar in his revered Thirupugazh hymns. This Temple is considered one among the 28 temples in Tamil Nadu where shrines of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu are housed in the same temple complex. This Temple is considered one among the Sakthi Peethas in Tamil Nadu.

History

The Temple is believed to be built in 3^rd Century CE. It is believed that this temple is considered as one of the Mada Temples built by Kochengata Chola, an early Chola Emperor. The temple was reconstructed in granite by the Later Cholas and extensively renovated by Vijayanagara Kings & Nayak rulers. There are about eight inscriptions recorded in this temple dating back to reigns of Pandyan King Jadavarman Veera Pandyan and Vijayanagara Kings Sadasiva Maharayar and Veera Bhupathy Achuthadeva Maharayar. Lord Shiva was called as Pal Vennai Nayanar in one of the inscriptions. The Temple received from patronage from Nattukottai Nagarathars in 19^th century CE. This temple is under the control of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of Government of Tamil Nadu (HR&CE).

Festivals

The annual Brahmotsavam is celebrated in the Tamil month of Chithirai (Apr-May). Skanda Sashti is celebrated here in a grand manner in the Tamil month of Aippasi (Oct–Nov) for Singara Velavar. This festival is celebrated for ten days. It is generally believed that Lord Murugan received the Vel at Sikkal and killed Surapadman at Thiruchendur, the next day.  Lord Murugan receives the Vel from his Mother Parvathy to destroy the demon Surapadman on the fifth day after the car festival.  Lord Murugan returns to his shrine with the weapon (vel) which he got from his mother here. The sweat drops can be seen on the idol of Lord Murugan in his shrine after receiving the weapon.

Vaikasi Visakam (May-Jun), Aani Thirumanjanam (Jun-Jul), Aadi Pooram (Jul-Aug), Avani Vinayakar Chaturthi (Aug-Sep), Purattasi Navaratri (Sep-Oct), Aippasi Annabishekam (Oct–Nov), Thiru Karthikai (Nov-Dec), Margazhi Thiruvadhirai (Dec-Jan), Thai Pongal & Thaipoosam (Jan-Feb), Masi Maha Shivrathri (Feb-Mar) and Panguni Uthiram (Mar-Apr) are the other festivals celebrated here. Pradosham, Pournami, Amavasya, Krithikai, Sankatahara Chaturthi, Mondays and Fridays are also observed regularly.
