Adi Kailasanathar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Avudaiyar Koil Village in Avudaiyar Koil Taluk in Pudukottai District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding deity is called as Adi Kailasanathar and Mother is called as Shivagami. The temple is considered as Thevara Vaippu Sthalam as Devaram hymns sung by Appar had a mention about this temple.

History

Thiruperunthurai (Avudaiyar Kovil) is associated with Manickavasagar, a 9th century CE Tamil saint and poet who wrote Thiruvasagam, a book of Shaiva hymns. He is said to have been a minister to the Pandya king Varagunavarman II (862 – 885 CE). Thiruperunthurai Temple is said to have been built by Manickavasagar when he was a minister of a Pandya king. This temple is said to have been in existence even during the time of Manickavasagar.



Hence, Lord Shiva of this temple came to be called as Aadhi Kailasanathar. The temple had been extensively renovated during the reigns of Later Pandyas in 14th century CE. This place was called Vadakkur (Vadakku means north in Tamil) and Thiruperunthurai was called Therkkur (Therku means south in Tamil) during ancient times. Even, now the place is called as Vada Nagar.


The Temple

This temple is facing towards east with three tiered rajagopuram. The temple consists of sanctum, ardha mandapam, maha mandapam and mukha mandapam. The mukha mandapam is an open pillared hall. Balipeedam, Dwaja Sthambam and Nandi can be seen in the mukha mandapam facing towards the sanctum. Presiding deity is called as Adi Kailasanathar and is facing east. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Shiva Lingam.


Dakshinamoorthy is the only koshta idol situated on southern wall of the sanctum. Mother is called as Shivagami. She is housed in a separate south facing shrine. Her shrine is situated in the maha mandapam on the right side. Shrines of Valampuri Vinayagar, Subramanya with his consorts Valli & Devasena, Bhairava, Chandran and Suryan can be seen in the temple premises. There is a sacred well situated in the temple premises.


Temple Opening Time

The temple remains open from 06.00 AM to 12.00 Noon and 04.00 PM to 09.00 PM.

Literary Mention

The temple is considered as Thevara Vaippu Sthalam as Devaram hymns sung by Appar had a mention about this temple. The temple is mentioned in 6th Thirumurai in 71st Patikam in 11th Song.

Prayers

Devotees pray here for child boon, removal of obstacles in marriage alliances and removal of negatives in their horoscopes. Special worship is performed on birthdays, wedding anniversaries and 60th & 80th birthdays for prosperity and healthy life.

Varadaraja Perumal Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu located in Shoolagiri Village in Shoolagiri Taluk in Krishnagiri District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding deity is called as Prasanna Varadaraja Perumal / Udayasthagirinadhar and Mother is called as Perundevi Thayar. The temple is considered as parihara sthalam for sarpa doshas.

Legends

Pandavas visit to Shoolagiri:

In Dvapara Yuga, when Pandavas lost in the gambling to Duryodhana, they were condemned to exile in the forest, as per the terms of the gambling. During the exile period, Pandavas went to several places and came to Shoolagiri as well. In Shoolagiri, Arjuna consecrated Varadaraja Perumal and worshipped him. To commemorate the visit of Pandavas to this place, there are 5 big rocks together in the Shoolagiri hill. There is also a carving of the dice game (gambling) indicating the connection to the Pandavas.  

Shoolagiri:

As the hill resembles trident (Shoolam in Tamil), this place came to be called as Shoolagiri.

Vaikunta of the South:

This temple is referred to as Dakshina Vaikunta Hasthashyla Sree Kshetram (Vaikunta of the South).

Udayasthagirinadhar:

As the rays of the setting sun fall on the feet of Perumal during Uttharayana period, he came to be called as Udayasthagirinadhar.

History

The temple is said to have been built by the Cholas and later expanded by the Hoysalas, Vijayanagara kingdom, Nayaks and Polygars. The maha mandapam was built by Emperor Krishnadevaraya of Vijayanagara Kingdom.

The Temple

The temple is situated on the slopes of Shoolagiri hill. This temple is facing towards west with three tiered rajagopuram. The temple consists of sanctum, antrala and pillared maha mandapam. The pillars of the mandapam are intricately carved. Sculptures of Lakshmi Narasimha, Narasimha slaying Hiranyakasipu, Navaneetha Krishnan, warrior riding a horse, various incarnations of Lord Vishnu, etc can be seen in the pillars of the maha mandapam.

The sanctum enshrines an image of Prasanna Varadaraja Perumal / Udayasthagirinadhar. He is facing towards west. He is about seven feet tall and in standing posture. The sun rays will fall on the feet of Lord Varadaraja Perumal during sun set during the Uttharayana period (mid-Jan to mid-July) every year. The main deity has been created in such a way that it seems to be appearing bigger in size when one moves far from the sanctum. There is a separate east facing shrine for goddess Perundevi Thayar.

There is a carving of two snakes trying to swallow Sun and Moon representing eclipses can be seen in front of the goddess shrine. There is a shrine for Lord Hanuman situated in the right side of the maha mandapam. There is a small cave enshrining an idol of Hanuman can be seen behind the temple. Shrines of Garuda, Ganesha, Lakshmi Narasimha, Ramanuja and Nammalvar can be seen in the temple premises.

Festivals

Varadaraja Perumal Jayanthi is celebrated on 21st May every year with special poojas, homas, Kalyanotsavam to Varadaraja Perumal and Perundevi Thayar. Garuda Seva is performed during Vaikunta Ekadashi in the Tamil month of Margazhi (Dec-Jan). This temple has the biggest Garuda Vahanam, compared to all the temples in the nearby areas.

Nagabharaneeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Melaiyur Village in Thiruporur Taluk in Chengalpattu District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding deity is called as Nagabharaneeswarar and Mother is called as Periyanayaki. The temple is considered as Rahu & Ketu parihara sthalam.

Legends

As per legend, Sage Agastya visited this temple and worshipped Lord Shiva here.

History

The temple is believed to be built by Chola Emperor Rajaraja Chola (947 CE – 1014 CE) as per an inscription found in this temple. The temple was in dilapidated stated in 2002. The locals with help of philanthropist rebuilt this temple and consecrated in 2008.

The Temple

This temple is facing towards east with three tiered rajagopuram. Balipeedam, Dhwaja Sthambam and Nandi can be found immediately after the rajagopuram facing towards the sanctum. The temple consists of sanctum, antrala, maha mandapam and mukha mandapam. Presiding deity is called as Nagabharaneeswarar and is facing east. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Shiva Lingam. Lord is a Swayambhu Moorthy (self-manifested).Nardana Ganapathy, Dakshinamurthy, Vishnu, Brahma and Durga are the koshta idols located around the sanctum walls.

Chandikeswarar shrine can be seen in his usual location. The vimana, structure over the sanctum is in the form of Gajabrusta, the shape of an elephant in its sitting posture. Mother is called as Periyanayaki. She is housed in a separate south facing shrine. There is a shrine for Kasi Viswanathar with his consort Visalakshi adjacent to the sanctum. There is a shrine for Varadaraja Perumal with his consorts Sridevi and Bhoodevi in the temple premises. Garuda can be seen facing this shrine.


Shrines of Valampuri Vinayaka, Anjaneya, Krishna with his consorts Rukmini & Sathyabama, Ayyappan, Murugan with his consorts Valli & Devasena, Mahalakshmi, Agastya, Lalithambigai, Tripura Sundari, Brahma with his Saraswathi, Chitragupta, Nataraja, Sarabeswarar, Bhairavar, Dattatreya, Sapta Matrikas and Navagrahas with their respective consorts can be seen in the temple premises. The temple tank is situated behind the temple. Sthala Vriksham is Tamarind Tree.


Festivals

Krithikai, Sashti, Pradosham and Pournami are the festivals celebrated here.

This temple is considered as parihara sthalam for Rahu and Ketu doshas. Devotees pray here to remove obstacles in marriage alliances and for child boon.

Naganatha Swamy Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Poyyakudi Village in Mayiladuthurai Taluk in Mayiladuthurai District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Naganatha Swamy and Mother is called as Saantha Nayagi. This temple is considered as Parihara Sthalam for Naga Dosha, Rahu and Ketu doshas. Poyyakudi was called as Poigai Kudi in ancient times.

It is believed that planets Rahu and Ketu worshipped Lord Shiva here.



The Temple

This temple is facing towards east with three tiered Rajagopuram. Nandi and Balipeedam can be seen immediately after the Rajagopuram facing the sanctum. The Sanctum Sanctorum consists of Sanctum, Ardha Mandapam and Maha Mandapam. The Maha Mandapam is designed to look like the forehead of a bat (Vovval Nethi Mandapam). There is another Nandi and Balipeedam can be seen in Maha Mandapam facing the sanctum. Presiding Deity is called as Naganatha Swamy and is facing east. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam.



Dakshinamoorthy, Lingodbhava and Durga are the Koshta idols located around the sanctum walls. Chandikeswarar Shrine can be seen in his usual location. Mother is called as Saantha Nayagi. She is housed in a separate south facing shrine. Her shrine is situated in Maha Mandapam to the left side of the sanctum. There are shrines and idols of Vinayagar, Murugan, Selva Vinayagar, Nardana Vinayagar, Rahu, Ketu, Lord Vishnu with his consort Maha Lakshmi, Bhairavar, Suryan and Saneeswarar in the temple premises.

The specialty of the temple is on the auspicious day of Shivrathri, those who visit Thirumangalam Bhoologanathar Temple on first Kaala Pooja, Mangudi Shivaloganathar Temple on second Kaala Pooja, Poyyakudi Naganathar Temple on third Kaala Pooja and again Thirumangalam Bhoologanathar Temple on fourth Kaala Pooja will get the benefit of worshipping all Shivalingas in in the world.
