Viswanathar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Kadambara Vazhkai Village near Kilvelur Town in Kilvelur Taluk in Nagapattinam District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Viswanathar / Sakalanathar and Mother is called as Visalakshi / Logambal. The Temple is considered as one of the Pancha Kadamba Sthalams.

Legends

Lord Muruga annihilated Sura Padman, his brothers and his army to safeguard Devas. Due to the killings, he acquired Veerahathi Dosha. Due to the Dosha, Lord Muruga prayed to Lord Shiva for relief. Lord Shiva advised Lord Murugan to worship him at Kilvelur, While worshipping Lord Shiva at Kilvelur, Lord Murugan installed five Shiva Lingas around Kilvelur and worshipped Lord Shiva to get rid of the sin of killing the demons during Sura Samhara. Hence these temples are collectively called as Pancha Kadamba Sthalams.

The Temple

The Temple facing towards east with an entrance arch. The entrance arch has stucco images of Rishabaroodar flanked by Vinayaga, Murugan and Nayanmars. Balipeedam and Nandhi Mandapam can be found facing the sanctum. The Sanctum Sanctorum consists of Maha Mandapam, Artha Mandapam and Sanctum. Presiding Deity is called as Viswanathar / Sakalanathar and is facing east.

He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam. Mother is called as Karpagavalli. She is housed in a separate south facing shrine in the Maha Mandapam. There is a separate shrine for Varadaraja Perumal in the temple premises. Varadaraja Perumal is gracing the devotees along with his consorts Sridevi and Bhoodevi. There are shrines for Vinayaga and Murugan in the temple premises.

Devotees need to travel Thiruvarur to Nagapattinam Route and take a left a left turn immediately after Aazhiyur at Aazhiyur Cycle Company Bus Stop. Travel further for 2.5 Kms to reach this Temple.

Kailasanathar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Agarakadambanur Village near Kilvelur Town in Kilvelur Taluk in Nagapattinam District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Kailasanathar and Mother is called as Soundara Nayagi / Azhagambikai.  Agarakadambanur was called as Koil Kadambanur in ancient times. This Temple is considered as one of the Pancha Kadamba Sthalams.

The Temple

The Temple is facing towards east with an unfinished Rajagopuram. It has single prakaram enclosed within compound walls. There is a Vinayagar shrine immediately after the entrance. Balipeedam and Nandhi Mandapam can be found facing the sanctum. The Sanctum Sanctorum consists of Maha Mandapam, Artha Mandapam and Sanctum. Presiding Deity is called as Kangalanathar and is facing east. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam.

Mother is called as Karpagavalli. She is housed in a separate south facing shrine in the Maha Mandapam. There are shrines for Pralayam Katha Vinayagar, Lord Murugan with his consorts Valli & Deivanai, Gaja Lakshmi, Bhairava and Surya can be found in the prakaram. There is a shrine for Pidari Amman called as Netri Kan Amman in the Temple premises. She is facing towards west.

The Temple remains open from 06.00 AM to 12.00 Noon and 04.00 PM to 08.30 PM.

Literary Mention

The Temple is considered as Thevara Vaippu Sthalam as Devaram hymns sung by Appar and Sundarar had a mention about this Temple. The Temple is mentioned in 6^th Thirumurai in 70^th Patikam in 7^th Song by Appar and 7^th Thirumurai in 12^th Patikam in 7^th Song by Sundarar.

History

The Temple is believed to be built in 7^th Century CE. It is believed that this temple is considered as one of the Mada Temples built by Kochengata Chola, an early Chola Emperor.

The Temple

This temple follows Mada Koil architecture (temples built at an elevation). The Temple is facing towards east. Presiding Deity is called as Naanmaraiyurar / Chathur Vedapureeswarar and is facing east. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam. Vinayaga, Dakshinamoorthy, Lingodbhava, Brahma and Durga are the Koshta idols located around the sanctum walls.

Chandikeswarar Shrine can be found in his usual location. His shrine is situated in the ground level. Mother is called as Muzhumathichoodi / Veda Nayagi. She is housed in a separate south facing shrine. There are shrines for Vinayaga and Murugan in the Temple premises.

The Temple

This Temple is facing towards east with a three-tiered Rajagopuram. The Sanctum Sanctorum consists of Maha Mandapam, Artha Mandapam and Sanctum. Balipeedam, Dwajastambam (flag staff) and Nandhi Mandapam can be found facing the sanctum. It also has Vinayaka near the flag post. Presiding Deity is called as Chozheeswaram Udayar / Chozheeswarar and is east facing. . He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam. Lord Shiva is a Swayambhu Moorthy in the form of a shell (Chozhi in Tamil). 

Utsava Idols in this Temple are Somaskandar and Sivakami. Shrine of Pradhana Vinayaka can be seen on the right side of sanctum. Mother is called as Soundarya Nayaki. She is housed in a separate south facing shrine. Her shrine is situated on the left side of the sanctum in Maha Mandapam. There are shrines for Valampuri Vinayaka, Shiva Durga, Chandikeswarar, Dakshinamurthy, Bhairava, Pidari Amman, Ayyanar, Navagrahas, Sani Bhagwan and Sun in the temple premises. Sthala Vriksham is Vanni Tree.

The temple remains open from 8.00 a.m. to 9.30 a.m. and from 5.00 p.m. to 7.00 p.m

Festivals

Vaikasi Visakam in May-June, Eka Dina Archana and monthly Pradoshams are celebrated here with much fanfare.
