Jalanatheeswarar Temple, Thakkolam, Vellore

Jalanatheeswarar Temple, Thakkolam, Vellore
Jalanatheeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Thakkolam Village in Vellore District of Tamilnadu. Presiding Deity is called as Jalanatheeswarar / Umapatheeswarar / Gangadheeswarar. Mother is called as Giriraja Kanni / Mohanavalli. It is the site where the great Chola prince Aditya Chola was killed in the battle. As a witness to the war one can see a renovated compound wall inside the temple. It is considered as the 12th among the Devara Paadal Petra Sthalams (274 most important temples of Lord Shiva) located in Thondai country.

The God is in the form of sand (Prithvi Linga) - cannot be touched even by the priest - called as 'Theendaa Thirumeni'. It is believed that the Goddess Parvati hugged the Shiva Linga and the marks (slight hollow) are still found in the idol. The Shiva Linga idol appears white during the drought period and it turns into red color during the fertile period. It changes its color automatically as per the season. Tirugnanasambandar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple.  This placed is referred as Thiruvooral in Thevaram. This is the 12th Devaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam in Thondai Nadu.

Arunagirinathar has revered Lord Muruga in this temple in his verses in Thiruppugazh. In the olden days, water used to come out of a Nandi idol near this temple and it would flow around the Shiva Linga. Then, it would reach another place and designed in such a way that it would come out of another Nandi idol; ultimately, it would reach the river 'Kallaru'. The place is also called as 'Thiruvooral' due to this reason. The temple is considered as an important Guru Sthalam.

Prayers
As divine cow Kamadenu worshipped here, prayers offered here bring 100 fold benefits to the devotee, according to Puranas. Almost prayers are for profitable farm yields. Devotees perform abishek to Lord and Mother and offer pudding-Pongal as Nivedhana. Prayers offered by people work wonders for those who are honest in their life even if they face severe problems in public life in a society which is surrounded by corruption everywhere. 99 percent of people reduce their faith when more problems are on the way due to their previous karma and less than one percent pass those tests to get a good and healthy life with wealth by putting more faith in divine power.
