Varadha Narayana Perumal Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu located at Vadakalathur Village in Nagapattinam District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Varada Narayana Perumal and Mother is called as Perundevi. The Temple tower of Thirukkanangudi Divya Desam can be seen from this Temple. This Temple is the central one among the Pancha Narayana Kshetrams, the foremost of them being Thirukkannamangai Damodhara Narayana Perumal Temple (18^th of 108 Divya Desams of Vaishnavite Temples). The temple poojas are performed as per Vaikanasa agama traditions.

The Anjaneya Idol is new and when immersed in milk, as per procedure before installation, the image of Anjaneyar is said to have appeared on the top of the milk.

History

The Temple is believed to be 1300 years old, constructed in late Pallava period. It seems to have been renovated 600 years later in Maratta/Nayaks period (may be by a king named Keechaka). The front tower is Katta Gopuram - having suffered major destruction in a worst ever cyclone of 1962. Original Moolavar idols are made of sand stones (unearthed in damaged condition and now preserved), and most probably replaced in 14^th century with the existing black stone statues of exceptional charm and beauty. Temple constructions were made of bricks in nan-madakooda model originally. People seem to have come across with bricks and wells whenever the earth is dug in the places around.  Two broken epigraphic stones with chakra seal (Aazhikkal) found in the debris stand proof for the glorious past of the temple.

The Temple

This is a small and beautiful temple situated adjacent to a lily pond, Theertham of this temple. Presiding Deity is called as Varada Narayana Perumal and is facing east. Garuda Shrine can be found facing the sanctum. Lord graces devotees in a smiling, standing posture with Makarakundalams, Shanku, Chakram, Abhaya and Kadi Hastham with Lakshmi as Srivathsam. Sridevi and Bhudevi are by his sides with flowers in hands. Mother is called as Perundevi. She is housed in a separate shrine. There are shrines for Lord Rama along with Sita and Lakshman, Vishvaksena, Nammazhwar and Vaishnavite Azhwars in the Temple premises.

Aabharana Dhari:

Mother Seetha embellished herself with all the jewels left here before going to further South. On the return journey to Ayodhya, she took them back. The name Aabharana Dhari coveys this (Aabharanam in Tamil means jewels).

Etymology:

The deity used to be adorned with jewels from head to toe and thus the name of the village was Aabharana (jewels) Dhari (One who is adorned with).

History

The Village was called as Aabharana Dhari Chathurvedhi Mangalam during Rajaraja Chola -II period in 12th Century AD. The name of the deity during the days of the Vijayanagara rulers was Pallikonda Perumal. But there are a large number of inscriptions of the days of Kulottunga III and Raja-raja III, found on stones built into the walls of the temple, which furnish interesting information on the change that took place in the temple in the post Chola period.

The Temple

The Temple is having Mahamandapam, Arthamandapam and Sanctum. Presiding Deity is called as Anandha Narayana Perumal / Ranganathar and is facing east. He is in Anantha Sayana Posture resting on seven headed Adhiseshan. Sridevi and Bhoodevi Thaayars are sitting next to the Lord and with Lord Brahma in Nabi Kamalam (Navel). Sage Brighu and Sage Vyasa can also be found near Lord Vishnu. The presiding Deity is a colossal size of Lord Ranganatha measuring 21 feet in length. It resembles to the Anantha Padmanabha Swamy of Thiruvananthapuram in many factors like in size and posture.

The garbhagriha having three doors to enable the devotees to view him from head to feet similar to Thiruvattaru Dhivya Desam. Lord cannot be viewed fully in the sanctum. Lord Vishnu’s feet can be viewed from the window first, then his body from the sanctum and finally his face from another window. The deity used to be adorned with jewels from head to toe and thus the name of the village was Aabharana (jewels) Dhari (One who is adorned with).

Garudazhwar Shrine can be found facing the sanctum before Maha Mandapam. Mother is called as Alankara Valli Thayar and is facing east. She is housed in a separate shrine on the southern prakaram. Anjaneyar Shrine can be found on the right side of the Arthamandapam. There is a Theertha Well located on the northern prakaram. Anantha Pushkarini is located to north east side outside the temple premises. The temple has given equal importance to Saivite Gods as evidenced by the Saivite symbols at several places, thereby establishing unity between Hari and Hara.

History

This village has a hoary past and was a centre of vedic learning. It is also mentioned in the 10^th century stone inscriptions of Later Chola Kings. The Renovation of the 1200-year-old dilapidated temple took place between Dec 1998 to Dec 1999 and the first Kumbabishekam in the 21^st century was held on 27-01-2000. Gradually all the festivals have been started. The Dwajasthambam was installed and the second Kumbabishekam was held on 18-06-2011.

The Temple

The Temple is facing east with 3 tiered Rajagopuram. There is a four pillared Mandapam after the Rajagopuram entrance. Pradosha Nandhi is located nearby this Mandapam. Presiding Deity is called as Dharmanatheswarar. Mother is called as Dharmasamvardhini. Mother is housed in a separate shrine in the prakaram. Mother is with four arms showing Varada and Abhaya Hastha in two hands and holding Angusam and Pasam in other two hands. There is a shrine for Varadharaja Perumal in the Artha mandapam.

There is a shrine for Kailasanathar and Aram Valartha Nayagi in the Temple premises. There are also shrines for Somaskandar, Ganesha, Murugan with consorts, Ambal and Chandikeswarar in the prakaram. Lord Shiva has performed special bravery acts in 8 places. They are Thirukandiyur, Thirukovilur, Thiruvathigai, Thirupariyalur, Thiruvirkudi, Thiruvazhuvur, Thirukurukai and Thirukadavur. Paintings in 8 panels of such acts of Lord Shiva have been drawn on the outer wall of the temple with suitable glass frames.

The Temple

There is an entrance arch facing south. The entrance has stucco images of Rishabaroodar in a Mandapam, Ganesha and Murugan. Stucco images of Nandhi can be found along the Temple walls. Presiding Deity is called as Karaikandeswarar and Mother is called as Balasundari. Both the presiding deity and Mother are housed in separate shrines and are facing east. Vinayagar, Dhakshinamoorthy, Mahavishnu and Durga are the Koshta idols located around the sanctum walls.

Shrines for Surya and Chandran can be found opposite to the sanctum. Lord Vinayaga and Lord Murugan with his consorts Valli and Deivanai can be found at the entrance of the sanctum. Sthala Vriksham is Vilwam Tree. There is a shrine for Anjaneya situated near this Temple. This Anjaneya Idol is believed to be installed by Vyasaraja.
