Viruthapureeswarar Temple, Annavasal, Pudukkottai
Viruthapureeswarar Temple is a
Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Annavasal Village near
Pudukottai Town in Pudukottai District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Viruthapureeswarar /
Pazhampathi Nathar and Mother is called as Dharmasamvardhini / Aram Valartha
Nayagi. The Temple is considered as Thevara Vaippu Sthalam as Devaram hymns had
a mention about this Temple. The Temple is also birth star temple for Kettai, Ayilyalyam
and Hastham Starrers. Annavasal was also known as Annavayil in ancient times.
Legends
It is believed that the Temple
was built by Bhooda Ganas of Lord Shiva.
History
The Temple is believed to be
built during 7th Century and has been renovated during Mughal
Empire.
The Temple
Presiding Deity is called as
Viruthapureeswarar / Pazhampathi Nathar and is facing east. He is housed in the
Sanctum in the form of Lingam. Lord is Swayambhu Moorthy. Balipeedam and Nandi
can be found facing the sanctum. Ganesha, Dakshinamurthy, Lingodbhava and Durga
are the Koshta Idols located around the sanctum walls. Mother is called as
Dharmasamvardhini / Aram Valartha Nayagi. She is housed in a separate shrine
and is facing south.
There is a big pond in front
of the Temple. There are stone pillars standing at the entrance of the Temple.
There are two old Shiva Lingas found on the prakaram. There are shrines for
Meenakshi Sundareswarar, Kasi Viswanathar, Bhairava, Chandikeswarar and Lord Murugan
with his consorts Valli & Deivanai in the Temple premises. There is an
inscription about a Chettiyar, who has done renovations to this Temple. Sthala
Vriksham is Vilva Tree.

AM to 12 Noon and 04.00 PM to 08.00 PM.
Festivals
10 days Masi Magam Festival,
Monthly Pradoshams, Vinayaga Chathurthi, Aippasi Annabishekam, Navaratri,
Karthigai, Thiruvadhirai, Panguni Uthiram, Weekly Fridays are the festivals
celebrated with much pomp and glory.

The Temple is considered as Thevara Vaippu Sthalam
as Devaram hymns sung by Appar had a mention about this Temple. The Temple is
mentioned in 6th Thirumurai in 71st Patikam in 7th
Song.
