Glenmorgan View Point, Ooty, Nilgiris

Glenmorgan View Point, Ooty, Nilgiris
Glenmorgan View Point is located in picturesque Nilgiris Hills near Ooty Town in Ooty Taluk of Nilgiris District of Tamilnadu. A little ahead from the Glenmorgan Dam lies a deserted bungalow. A narrow winding path from here will take you to one of the most exciting viewpoints of Ooty. The view from here is absolutely spectacular. Tourists can get a beautiful view of the Moyar Valley, Pykara Power Plant, certain parts of Mysore and Mudumalai Wild Life Sanctuary. The winds here are so strong, you can hardly hear the person next to you talking.

Apart from this there are (were) two mini architectural wonders here. One, a huge well and a 4 Kms rope way from a power house in Singara to Glenmorgan. This Winch carries staff from Glenmorgan viewpoint to the powerhouse at Singara. All the 4 kms of the Winch track passes through undisturbed sholas and wildlife habitat.  The ropeway has an inclination of nearly 41° for 300 meters (980 ft) near a stretch called the German Point making the ascent and descent through it difficult.

For the purpose of accommodating Electricity Board officials and tourists, rest houses are available at both ends of the ropeway. Both seem to be out of favor now with the authorities and are no longer in operation. Prior permission of E. B. authorities should be obtained to enter the viewpoint zone. Photography is strictly prohibited from the view point since it is a restricted place.

Glenmorgan View Point is located at about 6 Kms from Sholur, 39 Kms from Ooty Bus Stand, 40 Kms from Ooty, 39 Kms from Ooty Railway Station, 58 Kms from Coonoor, 68 Kms from Kotagiri, 89 Kms from Mettupalayam Railway Station and 135 Kms from Coimbatore Airport. Private Taxis are available from Ooty and Coonoor to reach this place.
