Arupadai Veedu Murugan Temple, Besant Nagar – History
Lord Subramanya, the son of Lord Shiva, is a popular
deity in Tamil Nadu state of India. He is also called as Skanda, Shanmukha or
Murugan. All across the state, there are many important temples dedicated to
him. Out of them, six temples are considered as the most important temples of
Murugan. They are together called as 'Arupadai Veedu' temples. The Arupadai
Veedu Murugan temple in Besant Nagar is a unique temple which enshrines all
these six adobes within one complex.
In 1984, Dr Alagappa Alagappan, came up with an idea of
having all Arupadai abodes at the same place. So that people can seek the
blessings of all the six abodes in a single temple complex, He went to the sage
Kanchi Paramacharya and conveyed his thoughts on this. The sage, nodded, and
gave a go to this divine project. An acre of land was allocated for the
construction of this granite temple by then chief minister Dr. MG.
Ramachandran.
The Shrines were built step by step. And the Consecration
of this temple was held on 2002. It is widely believed that Pamban Swamigal,
an ardent devotee of Lord Muruga lived in the last century and whose samadhi is
very close by, had a premonition that the six temples of Lord Muruga were going
to be constructed nearby. Already a number of miracles have been happening in
this temple complex.
