Ayyappan Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Ayyapan, son of Lord Shiva located at Trichy Cantonment in Trichy City is Trichy District of Tamilnadu. The Ayyappan Temple is located at Cantonment, Tiruchirappalli. Ayyappan statue is 50 feet tall and magnificence appearance located towards the east. The two main objectives of the temple are cleanliness and silent. The temple has big meditation hall of about 100 devotees can seated at the time for meditation. The special feature of the temple is treating all peoples equally without any discrimination.

Foreigners are also permitted to worship. It has clean green environment that helps people to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. This Ayyappan temple is very cleanly maintained with full of green plants and good pathway all around. Also, there are many stone slabs erected with inscribed quotes on mother by great persons. Another special thing is that there are many small stones collected from holy rivers and holy places all over the world placed on many small platforms along with the respective names of the rivers and places.

Every day pooja is being conducted to these stones as well. It is said that having Dharshan of this collection of holy stones in one place will remove hurdles in one’s life and make them prosper. Apart from the main deity Ayyappan, the other deities in the premises are Kannimoola Ganapathy, Sakthi Vinayagar, Bhagavathi Amman and Navagraha. There is a letter box to God and the letters to the divine will be presented before Ayyappan on Uthra star day of every month with prayers. The temple is noted for various periodical puja for various shrines.

The Aayilyam puja for Nagaraja is one among them. Falling in the Aayilyam star in the Tamil almanac every month, women devotees bring turmeric to Lord Nagaraja. The Trichy Ayyappa Sangam has set up a couple of stone grinders for facilitating the devotees to grind the turmeric. They can grind the turmeric on the spot and offer it to the Lord. The temple offers various services to the weaker section. It organizes yoga classes and blood donation camps. A weekly blood donation camp will be organised for six weeks on Sundays.

Pidari Iraniyamman Temple is a Hindu Temple located in Kallanai Road in Thiruvanaikoil near Trichy City in Trichy District of Tamilnadu. This Temple is a sub temple of Thiruvanaikoil Jambukeswarar Temple. Amman of this Temple is considered as Kaval Deivam (Protector God/Goddess) of Thiruvanaikoil. Usually the temple of that God/Goddess will be at the boundary of that village. Pidari Iraniyamman is also called as Ellai Amman / Pidari Amman. This Ellaiamman is an Ugra Devatha (Goddess with Fury).

It’s believed that Ellaiamman is formed from the sweat of Goddess Devi Akilandeswari. Ellaiamman protects the Thiruvanaikoil village from the evil. The temple of the Ellaiamman is in the South East corner outside the Thiruvanaikoil temple. Every year in the month of Thai a five-day festival is celebrated for this Goddess and the Goddess is taken into procession in side all streets of village in four different Vahanams (Yanai – Elephant, Kudhirai – Horse, Bootham and Ther – Chariot).

Festivals

Pradosha pujas (puja on the 13th day of new moon or full moon days between 4.30 p.m. to 6.00 p.m.) Shivarathri puja in February –March and Aipasi Annabishekam in October-November are devotionally followed in the temple. Guru Puja is devotionally celebrated on the Uthiradam star day following the full moon day in the month of Aadi – July-August. Saint Pattinathar belongs to Uthiradam Star, hence pujas are offered to him on the star days each month.

Prayers

Devotees raise a tent (pandal) with flowers and offer sweet pudding (Sarkarai Pongal) as Nivedhana. It is believed that prayers here help conquering passions and children born will be wise. Devotees perform special pujas to the saint. Pattinathar was an ascetic. People praying to him do not promise anything as prayer commitment but only place their grievances at his feet. They offer later what they wish or have. It is said that promising prayer commitment would have adverse results as Pattinathar was a Sanyasi. It is also said that Kubera the Lord of Wealth was born as Pattinathar and hence the belief that praying here would bring in prosperity.

Once, a couple Sivanesar and Gnana Kamalambigai, staunch Shiva devotees lived in Kaviripoompattinam, the capital of Chola kingdom. They had a son with the blessings of Lord Shiva named Thiruvenkadar, a Shiva devotee. He was in marine trade. When 16, he married Sivakalai. They had no children though years rolled by. Thiruvenkadar continued his prayers to Lord Shiva for a son. There also lived a couple devoted to Lord Shiva, Shivasarumar and Susheelai to whom Lord Shiva himself was born in the name of Marudavanar.

As the couple spent all their days in the service of the Lord, they could not bring up the boy due to poverty also. Lord Shiva appeared in their dream and advised to give the boy in adoption to Thiruvenkadar. Lord advised Thiruvenkadar too in his dream to accept the boy. The adoption was carried as ordered by the Lord. Marudavanar also followed the marine trade of his adopted father. Once, on his return from the trade, Marudavanar left a box to his mother and left the house.

When Thiruvenkadar opened the box to see the earnings of the son, he was shocked to see only some cakes made of husk and a note reading, “even a broken needle would not accompany a soul during the last journey”. Thiruvenkadar caught the lesson. He prayed to Lord Shiva seeking salvation and renounced his wealth and family life. Lord told him that he would get it at an appropriate time. Thiruvenkadar began his pilgrimage to Shiva shrines.

As he was born in Kaviripoompattinam, he came to be known as Pattinathar. While at Kasi, he accepted Badragiri the king of the place as his disciple. Both were staying in Thiruvidaimarudur for a while. Lord Shiva granted salvation to Badragiri there. When Pattinathar begged the Lord, he gave him a sugar cane and said that he would be getting his due when and where the sugar cane tastes sweet. After a long pilgrimage, finally, Pattinathar came to this place and found the sugarcane tasting sweet. He stayed there.

Pattinathar used to amuse people by performing some miracles. For example, he would get into a pit in one place and come out in another place. One day, he asked some boys to place over him a big vessel covering his entire body. When everyone expected that he would come out at some other place, it didn't happen so. When they removed the vessel, they found an idol of Shiva Linga instead of Pattinathar. Everybody realized that Pattinathar got transformed into a Shiva Linga. Thus, Pattinathar got salvation here. The temple was built at this place then.

It is said that the relatives including his wife came to the spot where Pattinathar attained mukthi and offered their devotion. There are two siddhars one Pattinathar and the second Vallalar are the only saints who have not left any mortal remains of the body. Pattinathar has given us his experience and wisdom in the form of hymns. His works include Thirukazhumala Mummanikkovai, Thiruvidai Marudhur Mummanikkovai, Thiruvegambamudaiyar Tiruvandadhi and Thiruvotriyur Orupa Orupadhu.

The Temple is situated on the shores of Bay of Bengal. There is no tower or vimanas. The entrance of the temple is not tall. The devotee has to enter bending the neck as a mark of humility.  The saint Pattinathar is facing the sea from a separate shrine in a Linga form on a square peeta (stage). The traditional Nagabarana (the divine snake jewel on the head of Linga) is also placed on the idol.

The saint is considered as Lord Shiva and pujas performed accordingly. There are 27 lamps in his shrine representing 27 stars. Ghee is used to light the lamps. The sacred ash used for the abishek is offered as Prasad. This is actually a Jeeva Samadhi Temple. The Sanctum housing the Linga is the burial spot of the mortal remains of Pattinathar, the 15^th century saint. While a superstructure appears to have existed even in early times, the present structure over the sepulcher cannot be more than some 100 years old.

The superstructure over the Samadhi is a building of low height which has a flat ceiling comprising wooden planks above which is a vaulted roof. It is divided into three sections – a congregational hall in the front, a narrow vestibule in the middle and the sanctum at the rear. Flooring is of black slabs probably of the Cuddappah variety and the walls are of chunam. The building is fronted by a space covered by a sloping roof structure with Mangalore tiles.

Nandhi can be found facing the sanctum. Lord Vinayaka and Lord Muruga can be found in the front mandapam. Chandikeswara graces from his usual location in the prakaram. Sthala Vriksham is Vilwa and Theertham is Bay of Bengal.

Dakshinamurthy Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to a form of Lord Shiva located at Thiruvotriyur, well known locality in Chennai City in Tamil Nadu. This Temple is located just before the Thyagarajar Temple on the Sannathi Street. This temple has an impressive huge stone icon of Lord Dakshinamurthy in the meditation form facing north.

Legends

There was a Siddha living in this region running a school to teach Vedas to students. He made an idol of Lord Dakshinamurthy, the origin of Vedas.

The Temple

This is a temple dedicated to Lord Dakshinamurthy facing north. Lord holds Agni (fire) in the right hand, serpent in the left, pressing Muyalagan the symbol of ignorance. Traditionally, only four Maharshis – Sanakar, Santana, Sananthana and Sanathkumaarar are with the Lord. There are 18 Maharshis around the Lord in this temple, a rare form. There is an elephant worshipping near the Lord on the Peeta.

Traditionally, Lord Dakshinamurthy is seen facing South. Rarely, he is facing North, thus making this place more sacred as Vada Guru Sthalam –North Jupiter Land. The installation of the deity is on the basis of Jupiter facing north among the nine planets. Special pujas are performed to Lord Dakshinamurthy on Thursdays. Special Homas and Shiva related Rudra Japa Mantra Pujas are performed with special abishekams on Jupiter transit days.

There is a metal idol of Dhakshinamoorthi which is lively and very beautiful. There is a small Shiva Linga idol found near the main Dhakshinamoorthi’s foot. There is Bana Linga in the front hall of the temple. Pujas are performed to Bana Linga when it is performed to Lord Dakshinamurthy. Acharyas Adi Sankara and Veda Vyasa are the procession deities. Special Pujas are performed to Maharshi Veda Vyasa on Chitra Poornima day.

Lord Panchamukha Vinayaka graces on a Lion vehicle in a shrine left of the presiding deity. The significance is that all faces of Lord Vinayaka are on a single direction. Another Vinayaka graces sitting under the Arasa Maram in the prakara. The Temple also houses the Jeeva Samadhi of Siddhar Yogeeswarar Swamy. This Dhakshinamoorthy Temple is built by Yogeeswarar Swamy.

The temple remains open from 6.00 a.m. to 11.00 a.m. and from 4.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m. On Thursdays, the temple is open from 5.00 a.m. to 9.00 p.m. continuously.

Festivals

Chitra Poornima in April-May and Jupiter transit days are the festivals celebrated here with much fanfare.

Prayers

This is sacred place dedicated with Guru-Jupiter worship facing north, the direction of Kubera the Lord of Wealth. It is believed that worshipping here benefits the devotee with all prosperity. Those buying land and building use to place the bricks in the form of a house in the temple before concluding the deal. Those seeking excellence in education, arts, literature and music pray to the Lord. For removal of obstacles in wedding efforts, devotees light lamps in lime cups with ghee on Sundays between 4.30 p.m. and 6.00 p.m. They also offer garlands made of a particular cereal called Kondai Kadalai and ghee lamps in Lord Dakshinamurthy shrine. Realizing their wishes, devotees perform abishek to Lord with milk, Panchamritham and offer yellow vastras-clothing.
