Kasi Viswanathar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Thiruvidaimarudur Town in Thiruvidaimarudur Taluk in Thanjavur District in Tamil Nadu. Thiruvidaimarudur is considered as equivalent to Kasi. This Temple is considered as one of temples of Pancha Linga Sthalams of Thiruvidaimarudur. The Temple is situated in the east street of Thiruvidaimarudur Mahalingeswarar Temple. The Temple can be reached by taking the small road on the southern corner of the east street towards eastern direction. The Temple is under the control Thiruvaduthurai Aadheenam.

The Temple

This is a small west facing temple. The Temple covers an area of about 20 cents. Presiding Deity is called as Kasi Viswanathar. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam. A Mandapam can be found in front of the sanctum. Nandi can be found in the prakaram facing the sanctum. Dakshinamoorthy and Durga are the Koshta idols located around the sanctum walls. Chandikeswarar can be found in his usual location.

Mother is called as Visalakshi. She is housed in a separate south facing shrine. There is a shrine for Vinayagar in south western corner of the temple premises. There is an inscription in upside down on the wall of entrance.

The Temple

This is an east facing temple with an entrance arch. Stucco image of Mother Meenakshi marriage posture can be seen at the top of the entrance arch. Presiding Deity is called as Chokkanathar / Sundareswarar. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam. Lord Vinayaga and Lord Murugan can be found at the entrance of the sanctum. Mother is called as Meenakshi. She is housed in a separate south facing shrine. There is a separate east facing shrine housing Ashta Dasa Bhuja Maha Lakshmi Durga in the north western corner of the Temple premises. Rahu Kaala Pooja is famous in this shrine.

Brahmmahathi Dosham:

Pandyan King, Varaguna, who, according to tradition, lived in the seventh century A.D. Once he went for hunting in a nearby forest and when he started back home, dusk had already fallen. The horse, fatigued by the hunt, was anxious to get back to the stables, and literally flew over the path. Meanwhile an aged Brahmin, also travelling through the forest, had called it a day and was lying fast asleep under the shelter of a large tree.

Unfortunately, the path which the King’s horse took was led over the very place where the old man lay sleeping. The hooves of the horse crushed his chest, and he perished on the spot. So fast was horse that the King had no inkling of this terrible calamity. Only when the soldiers following him saw the dead Brahmin and informed him, did the King come to know of the tragedy.

He lost no time in observing the penances and sacrifices ordained in the shastras for absolution from this sin; but the damage was done Brahmmahathi (spirit of the dead Brahmana) clung to him all the more tightly. In despair, the King sought the help of Lord Sundareswarar of Madurai. One day, when he was circumambulating the shrine, a divine voice stated him that a Chola King will invade your Kingdom soon. Fight him and he will be defeated.

As he flees back to his country, chase him without harming him. He will lead you to Thiruvidaimarudur where Lord Shiva himself worshipped his own image. The Sin clinging to you now will leave you by praying to Lord Shiva there. The King then visited the temple at Thiruvidaimarudur as per the divine guidance and prayed to Lord Mahalingeswarar. He entered the temple through the Eastern entrance and the Brahmmahathi could not enter the temple and waited outside the temple for the King to return. 

As advised by Mahalingaswamy, the King left by the Western Gopuram (Tower) and hence got rid of the Brahmmahathi dosham and the Brahmin’s ghost. The Brahmmahathi is waiting outside still in the south ornamental entrance (south Torana Vayil) with head disheveled and face immersed betwixt the knees. The king was relieved of his malady. 

As he prayed to Lord Chokkanathar sincerely for his relief. In gratitude, Varaguna Pandya built a temple dedicated to Chokkanathar on the northern entrance of the Temple. Those who are visiting this Temple, should make it a point to enter through the main entrance to Shiva shrine, then to Goddess shrine and return by a different entrance to get rid of one’s Dhoshams.

Unique Abhishekam:

One of the interesting beliefs held here is that an Abhishekam performed to Chokkanathar to the accompaniment of the megaraagakurinji raagam would result in a bountiful monsoon.

Athmanathar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Thiruvidaimarudur Town in Thiruvidaimarudur Taluk in Thanjavur District in Tamil Nadu. Thiruvidaimarudur is considered as equivalent to Kasi. This Temple is considered as one of temples of Pancha Linga Sthalams of Thiruvidaimarudur. The Temple is situated in the south street of Thiruvidaimarudur Mahalingeswarar Temple. It is located close to Krishna Nursery school.

History

Manickavasagar had sung about the Lord of this Temple. During his pilgrimage to North Tamil region, Manickavasagar accompanied by Shiva devotees visited this Temple. He stayed in this place for some time and worshipped the Lord of this temple. Finally, when he decided to continue his pilgrimage further into the northern region, few devotees unable to bear the separation from the Lord, decided to stay here itself. This group of devotees came to be called as Anju Kothu Parambarai. They built this Temple similar to Avudaiyar Kovil Athmanatha Swamy Temple for their worship. The Temple was still maintained by Anju Kothu Parambarai. Anju Kothu Parambarai is still holding the rights to perform Poojas to Veerabhadra Swamy in Avudaiyar Kovil Temple.

The Temple

This is an east facing temple with dilapidated entrance arch in the south side. The Temple was built entirely in granite stones. Presiding Deity is called as Athmanathar. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Avudaiyar. Only Linga is present. He is in formless form and is facing east. Mother is called as Yogambal. She is housed in a south facing shrine. Both Lord and Mother are in formless form similar to Avudaiyar Kovil Athmanatha Swamy Temple.

There is a small shrine dedicated to Manickavasagar, opposite to Mother shrine. The idol had been lost and the shrine is empty now. Nandi can be found facing the sanctum in the prakaram. An east facing Vinayaga can be found nearby. All Poojas and rituals are performed similar to Avudaiyar Kovil Athmanatha Swamy Temple.

History

The Temple was built by Parantaka Chola. The place was called as Thiruvirarkundram and Thirunarkundram and Lord was called as Thirumaadathu Koonanar and Sadanandar as per the inscriptions dated to Parantaka Chola period. As per one of the inscriptions in the Temple, the village was also called as Thinnakonam and as per another inscription, was called as Thinnakunam.

Narkundram:

During ancient times, the village was populated with cow herders. A cow belonged to one of the cow herders used to milk by itself on a particular spot every day. This practice of his cow angered the cowherd. The cowherd hit the cow with a stick, on account of the beatings, the cow died. Lord Shiva appeared in Parantaka Chola dreams and instructed him to visit Narkundram and construct the temple in the place, where the cow got killed.

He also informed the Kinga that he himself had manifested in the dead body of the cow. At the same time, Lord Shiva instructed Mother Parvathi to visit Narkundram and worship the Lingam in the shape of cow to get rid of her curse. As instructed, Parantaka Chola built the Temple. The name Narkundram got corrupted to Nerkundram and further got corrupted to Thinnakonam.

3 Konams of Suryan:

Konam means Chakram or Yanthra. Lord Surya contain three Kona Sakthi namely Kanni Konam, Thinna Konam and Parithi Konam. He got three Konams by praying to three Lingams in 3 different times of a day. He got Kanni Konam by praying to Amoor Raviswarar during sunrise, he got Thinna Konam by praying to Thinnakonam Pasupatheeswarar during noon and he got Parithi Konam by praying to Parithi Niyamam Paruthiyappar during sunset.

Abhijit Muhurat:

According to Vedic astrology there is a special muhurat called Abhijit Muhurat. This Muhurat is auspicious for any work. Abhijit Muhurat is not special to any particular condition, but it is present every day. The duration of the Abhijit Muhurat lingers up to 48 minutes. 24 minutes before and after the sidereal time is called the Abhijit Muhurat. Basically, it stays up to 48 minutes, but the duration may reduce if the day is shorter. As the Abhijit Muhurat is auspicious people opt for this Muhurat to perform their work.

Abhijit Muhurat safeguards a work even if the day is inauspicious. It should not be confused with the Abhijit Nakshatra which is the twenty eighth Nakshatra amongst the total Nakshatras. Abhijit Muhurta is capable of removing all Doshas. It is considered an auspicious time to do any kind of work. Balipeedam and Nandi, housed in a Mandapam can be found facing the sanctum. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam. The Lingam is in the form of cow laid down in the sanctum. Lord is a Swayambhu Moorthy. It is believed that Linga kept growing every day. The vimana, structure over the sanctum is in the form of Gajabrusta, the shape of an elephant in its sitting posture. 

Lingodbhava, Arthanareeswarar and Veena Dakshinamoorthy are the Koshta idols located around the sanctum walls. Mother is called as Govindavalli / Shivagama Sundari. She is housed in a separate east facing shrine. There is a shrine for Agastya in the Temple premises. A wax prepared as per Siddha practice is provided as prasadam to the devotees in this shrine on Brahma Muhurtam on every Wednesday.

There are shrines of Valampuri Vinayagar, Sankara Narayana, Lakshmi Narayana, Sastha, Sivasakthivelan with his consorts Valli & Deivanai, Swarna Akarshana Bhairavar, Suryan, Chandikeswarar, Navagrahas and Chandran in the Temple premises. Sthala Vriksham are Vilva Tree and Panneer Tree.

Legends

It is customary to visit both the temples of Thirukkarugavur and Karuvalarcheri together on a single day for the couples longing for child. Couples perform poojas to Mother here for child birth.
