Legends
King Vikramaditya built this Temple:
King Vikramaditya
ruled the Madya Pradesh with the capital of Ujjain. He lived in the country as
well as forest for each six months respectively. Whenever he goes he brought
the Kali idol to worship. When he came to Makalikudi forest and worship the
kali idol, he cannot take the Kali idol after the prayer from this place. When
he pleaded to Kali, she refused to come out of this place and she wants a
temple in this place. So, The King Vikramaditya built this temple in
Makalikudi. There are idols of the Vedhalam and that of his wise minister
Kaluvan in this temple which proved this history.
Lord Shiva and Mother Shakti
as One:
The temple emphasizes the philosophy that Lord
Shiva and Mother Shakti are but one, hence the Arthanareeswara form. It is said
that Mother Parvathi wanted poojas held for her also as to Lord Shiva and the
temple came into being on this background story. Mother Ananda Sowbagya Sundari
graces from the temple representing this Shiva-Shakti Aikiya (Oneness)
philosophy.
