Vikrama Choleeswarar Temple,
Thippirajapuram, Thanjavur
Vikrama Choleeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Thippirajapuram Village near Kumbakonam Town in Kumbakonam Taluk in Thanjavur District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Vikrama Choleeswarar and Mother is called as Abhirami. The Temple is situated on banks of Thirumalairajan Pattinam River (T.R. Pattinam River).
History
It is believed that Vikrama
Chola built this Temple during 12th Century AD. He built this Temple
to remove Brahma Hathi Dosham as a Brahmin fell under his horse and died when
he was around here. Thippaiyya, a minister of Thanjavur Nayak King, donated
this Village to the Brahmins. Hence, the village came to be called as
Thippaiyarajapuram. Later got corrupted to Thippirajapuram. Sri Narayana Swamy
Pandithar, a famous vedic pundit, born in this village. Also, Sri Narayana
Swamy Pandithar, a famous Sanskrit scholar, wrote slogans about the Lord of the
Temples in this Village.
The Temple
This is a small east facing
temple. Though it has a small entrance in the east, the main entrance is from
south. Presiding Deity is called as Vikrama Choleeswarar and is facing east. He
is housed in the sanctum in the form of Linga. Only Dakshinamoorthy can be
found in the Koshta wall. Mother is called as Abhirami. She is housed in a
separate south facing shrine.
There are shrines for Swarna
Ganapathy, Lord Murugan with his consorts Valli & Deivanai, Ayyanar,
Bhairavar, Suryan, Chandran, Somaskandar, Nataraja, Durga, Navagrahas and
Saneeswarar with a Lingam nearby can be in the temple premises. Lakshmi and
Saraswathi are housed in the same shrine.

1.5 Kms from Thippirajapuram Bus Stop, 2 Kms from Marudanallur, 3 Kms from
Valangaiman Bus Stand, 5 Kms from Nachiyar Kovil, 6 Kms from Kumbakonam Railway
Station, 7 Kms from Kumbakonam Bus Stand, 8 Kms from Kumbakonam, 42 Kms from
Thanjavur and 100 Kms from Trichy Airport. The Temple is situated on Kumbakonam
to Needamangalam Route.
