Kadaimudinathar Temple, Keezhaiyur – Legends

Kadaimudinathar Temple, Keezhaiyur – Legends

Kiluvai Nathar:

As per legend, Lord Brahma incurred the curse of Lord Shiva due to his pride and arrogance. Lord Brahma realised his mistake and visited several Shiva temples including this temple for relief from the curse incurred. Lord Brahma excavated a tank here and performed ablution to Lord Shiva from the water drawn from the tank. As the tank was created by Lord Brahma, the tank came to be called as Brahma Theertham. Pleased with his worship, Lord Shiva granted darshan to Lord Brahma under the Sthala Vriksham (Kiluvai tree) and relieved Lord Brahma from his curse. Hence, Lord Shiva came to be called as Kiluvai Nathar / Aadhi Nathar.

Sage Kanva attained salvation here:

As per legend, it is believed that Sage Kanva visited this place, took bath in Cauvery River and worshipped Lord Shiva of this temple. He later attained salvation at this temple. The Ghat where he used to take bath is called as Kanva Mahan Thurai.

Kiluvai Oor:

Sthala Vriksham of this temple is Kiluvai Tree. Hence, the village came to be called as Kiluvai Oor and later got corrupted to Keezhaiyur / Keezhur.

Ezhur:

As the village consisted of seven settlements in ancient times, the village is also called as Ezhur (Ezhu means seven in Tamil and Oor means place).
