Kailasanathar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Sevilimedu village near Kanchipuram City in Kanchipuram Taluk in Kanchipuram District of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Kailasanathar and Mother is called as Kamakshi. This temple is also called as Kizhakku Kailasanathar Temple / East Kailasanathar Temple. The place was called as Shiva Linga Medu in ancient times and got corrupted to Sevilimedu to the present day.
History
The temple was believed to be built by Pallavas and later was extensively renovated by Cholas. Inscriptions dated back to Pallavas and Cholas reign can be seen on the foundation and walls of the sanctum sanctorum. The temple was lost completely to nature fury and excavated during 20th century.
The Temple
This Temple is facing towards east with single tiered Rajagopuram on the southern side. Balipeedam and Nandi can be found facing the sanctum. The Sanctum Sanctorum consists of Sanctum, Antrala and Maha Mandapam. Presiding Deity is called as Kailasanathar and is facing east. He is housed in the form of Lingam. The Linga is Dhara Linga with sixteen stripes in it. Somaskandar can be seen behind the Linga. Vinayagar, Dakshinamoorthy, Vishnu, Brahma and Durga are the koshta idols located around the sanctum walls. Chandikeswarar Shrien can be seen in his usual location.
Utsava idols are housed in the Maha Mandapam. As in other temples in Kanchipuram, there is no separate shrine of Parvathi as it is believed that Kamakshi of Kanchipuram Kamakshi Temple is the common Parvathi shrine for all Shiva temples. Shrines of Nava Shakthi Vinayagar, Adhi Kailasanathar, Kasi Viswanathar, Swayambhu Lingeswarar, Navagrahas, Bhairavar and Lord Murugan with his consorts Valli & Devasena can be seen in the temple premises. Naga can be found below the tree in the temple premises.
Temple Opening Time
The temple remains open from 09.00 AM to 12.00 Noon and
04.00 PM to 08.00 PM.
Sevilimedu has 4 Shiva
Lingas namely West (Merku) Kailasanathar, East (Kizhakku) Kailasanathar, North
(Vadakku) Kailasanathar and South (Therku) Kailasanathar. Out of these three
Shiva Lingas, three of them namely West (Merku) Kailasanathar, North (Vadakku)
Kailasanathar and South (Therku) Kailasanathar are housed in Erikarai Kailasanathar
Temple. The remaining Lingam namely East Kailasanathar is housed in a separate temple
called Kizhakku Kailasanathar temple, situated in the midst of the Village.
