Vishwanathar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Vittalur Village in Thiruvidaimarudur Taluk in Thanjavur District in Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Vishwanathar and Mother is called as Visalakshi. The Temple is situated on the southern banks of Nattaru River.
Legends,
Once, a Chola King struck
Heranda Maharishi with his arrow mistakenly. He was afflicted with Brahma Hathi
Dosha due to his action. The King worshipped the Gopuram of Thiruvidaimaruthur
Mahalingeswarar from the banks of River Nattaru and got relieved rom his Dosha.
In gratitude, the King built this Temple and named the Lord as
Chozheeswaramudaiyar in Thiruneelakudi. He got relieved from his dosham at
Vittalur, located close to Thiruneelakudi. As the sin got away, the place came
to be called as Vittalur.
The Temple
This Temple is facing towards
west, but the main entrance is from the southern side. Presiding Deity is
called as Vishwanathar and is facing west. He is housed in the sanctum in the
form of Lingam. Mother is called as Visalakshi. She is housed in a separate
south facing shrine. There are shrines for Vinayagar, Navagrahas and Murugan in
the temple premises. There is a south facing Nataraja Mandapam in the temple
premises.

12 Kms from Kumbakonam Railway Station, 13 Kms from Kumbakonam, 13 Kms from Kumbakonam
Bus Stand, 55 Kms from Thanjavur and 112 Kms from Trichy Airport. The Temple is
situated on Kumbakonam to Karaikal Route. Buses are available from Kumbakonam
frequently.
