Brihadeeswarar Temple – Security at the Temple
Amongst other temples in India, the
Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) also controls the
Brihadeeswarar temple, also called as Big Temple standing as
witness to the Chola Architecture.
In a move to enhance security at
this temple located at Thanjavur, a number of cameras with high
surveillance capacity have been installed. These 31 cameras cost about Rs
1.30 crores and have the “pan tilt zoom” option enabling coverage of about 150
metres from the point of installation.
The panorama and fixed types of cameras capture crystal
clear images of movements on the temple premises.
These cameras are positioned strategically at various
places in the temple complex. This apart, a monitor is also positioned at
the entrance to view images captured by cameras.
The cameras are strategically placed on top of twin
gopurams, Amman shrine, Arch at entrance, atop the main shrine and at various
places. The cameras can retain footages upto 45 days.
As a measure of enhanced security, a bomb detection
squad from Thanjavur Police is stationed at the entrance
of temple for frisking entrants. The metal door frame is
also installed to detect bombs, if any at the entrance itself.
